Health activist, scholar, award-winning journalist, and cancer survivor Sharon Batt investigates the relationship between patient advocacy groups and the pharmaceutical industry as well as the contentious role of pharma funding. Over the past several decades, a gradual reduction in state funding has pressured patient groups into forming private-sector partnerships. Patient organizations and social health movements offer one of the most important and illuminating examples of civil society engagement and participation in scientific research and research politics. This volume documents in some detail current practices in prenatal diagnosis and testing in Canada today and, in the process, provides answers to many questions raised in the Commission's public consultations. This is done through an analysis of the activities of all Canadian genetics centres providing PND, as well as an analysis of the process by which women are referred to these centres. Other studies in the volume focus not on prenatal diagnostic procedures but on prenatal screening programs.
