Vietnam Riverine Craft 1962–75 PDF Author: Gordon L. Rottman
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1782000607
Category : History

Pages : 92

Book Description
In 1965 the military situation in the Mekong River Delta of southern Vietnam had deteriorated to such a degree that the decision was made to commit a joint US Army and Navy Mobile Riverine Force to the area. This force was unique in its composition, mission, and the means by which it operated – riverine craft. Comprising the Army's 2d Brigade, 9th Infantry Division, and the Navy's River Assault Flotilla One, it used a variety of watercraft, including heavily modified landing craft, purpose-built patrol boats, and a whole host of auxiliary and support craft. This book explores those craft, and also gives an account of Task Force Clearwater, a much smaller operation in the extreme northern part of South Vietnam.

Vietnam Infantry Tactics

Vietnam Infantry Tactics PDF Author: Gordon L. Rottman
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1849085064
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 66

Book Description
This book reveals the evolving US, Viet Cong and NVA tactics at battalion level and below throughout the Vietnam War. Beginning with a description of the terrain, climate and the unique nature of operations in this theatre of war, the author, a Vietnam veteran himself, goes on to explain how unit organisation was broken down by combatant forces and the impact this had on the kind of tactics they employed. In particular, the author highlights how units were organised in reality on the battlefield as opposed to their theoretical tables of organisation. US tactics included the standard US tactical doctrine as prescribed by several field manuals and in which leaders and troops were rigourously trained. But it also reveals how many American units developed innovative small unit tactics specifically tailored to the terrain and enemy practices. In contrast, this book also reveals the tactics employed by Viet Cong and NVA units including their own Offensive Operations, Reconnaissance, Movement Formations and Security, and Ambushes.

Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 513

Book Description
From Army Rangers to Green Berets to the U.S. Navy SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden, this book explains what makes Special Forces "special," covering the rich and varied history of elite formations in American military history and describing their recruitment, intense training, and equipment in depth. Most civilians have only a vague idea of what the U.S. Special Forces are all about—who they are, how they differ from our "normal" military forces, what they've accomplished throughout our history, and how they operate today. Fighting Elites: A History of U.S. Special Forces examines the rich and varied history of U.S. Special Forces, identifies their contributions to specific conflicts from colonial times forward, and highlights their present operational excellence. In this first-ever reference guide to U.S. Special Forces, military historian John C. Fredriksen provides a carefully balanced presentation, describing all units in their own detailed section that discusses their origins, recruitment, training, tactics, and equipment, and defining military engagements, if known. The text also contains 20 biographical entries of noted personalities associated with special purpose activities.

River Warfare in Vietnam

River Warfare in Vietnam PDF Author: Robin L. Rielly
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476691274
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 537

Book Description
America's entrance into the wars in Vietnam came as a result of several factors. Among them was the necessity of bolstering French influence in the area in the face of mounting communist expansion. This expansion was intensified by the outbreak of the Korean War, making it necessary for the United States to revamp its Southeast Asian policy. During the French era, control of Vietnam's rivers, streams and canals became necessary. This led various factions to develop specialized military units heavily dependent on new types of river craft that could traverse the myriad waterways in Vietnam. The focal point of this study is a new assessment of the conduct of river warfare. Drawing on little-known French, Vietnamese and American sources and materials, it sheds light on an important aspect of the Vietnam War. Chapters also detail numerous aspects of river warfare not generally covered in other books on the subject.

Swift Boats at War in Vietnam

Swift Boats at War in Vietnam PDF Author: Guy Gugliotta
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 0811765652
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
You-are-there stories of ambushes and patrols on the Mekong in the Vietnam War Developed specifically for the Vietnam War (and made famous by the 2004 presidential campaign), Swift Boats were versatile craft “big enough to outrun anything they couldn’t outfight” but too small to handle even a moderate ocean chop, too loud to sneak up on anyone, and too flimsy to withstand the mildest of rocket attacks. This made more difficult an already tough mission: navigating coastal waters for ships and sampans smuggling contraband to the Viet Cong, disrupting enemy supply lines on the rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta, and inserting SEALs behind enemy lines. The stories in this book cover the Swift Boats’ early years, which saw search-and-inspect operations in Vietnam’s coastal waters, and their later years, when the Swift Boats’ mission shifted to the Mekong Delta’s labyrinth of 3,000 miles of rivers, streams, and canals. This is an intimate, exciting oral history of Swift Boats at war in Vietnam.

U.S. Navy Patrol Vessels

U.S. Navy Patrol Vessels PDF Author: Ken W. Sayers
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 147667650X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 558

Book Description
During the past century, U.S. Navy patrol vessels have operated everywhere larger warships have--as well as in places where the big boats could not operate. These bantam warriors have performed in a variety of roles, from antisubmarine warfare to convoy escort and offensive operations against enemy forces afloat and ashore. Patrol vessels battled German units in the Mediterranean, fought insurgents along rivers and canals in China and Vietnam and protected U.S. ships and facilities in the Persian Gulf. Covering more than 1000 of the Navy's small combatants, this comprehensive survey provides all-time rosters, histories, specifications and illustrations of patrol vessels from before World War I to the present. World War II PT boats and submarine chasers and Vietnam War swift boats are covered, along with less well known ships such as Eagle boats, patrol yachts, hydrofoil gunboats and control escorts. A detailed accounting of patrol vessel exports, transfers and shipbuilders is included.

Swift Boat Tour of Duty

Swift Boat Tour of Duty PDF Author: Tim Eichholtz
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1640822720
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
Serving on Swift Boats was at times a treacherous duty. The crew was made up of six men, an officer and five enlisted. For Coastal Division 13 in 1967 and ’68, our patrol area was the coastline, canals, and riverways just a little north of the Mekong Delta all the way to the tip of South Vietnam. We patrolled areas where there were no friendlies, and if we ran into trouble, we were basically on our own for quite some period of time. This book is about my year in Vietnam on one of these Swift Boats. It includes pictures of boats on duty, some of the scenes of South Vietnam, and excerpts from the Cat Lo base log. I have been in contact with my skipper and shared with him what I have written. He has inserted some things I had missed. This story is real and is shared to show you some of my experiences during this time. This was part of the ten and a half months before the Tet offensive occurred and my last month and a half after the Tet offensive. My experiences and time were a cakewalk compared to what others experienced during this time and the years that followed.

Nile River Gunboats 1882–1918

Nile River Gunboats 1882–1918 PDF Author: Angus Konstam
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472814770
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 52

Book Description
For more than 30 years the Nile river gunboat was an indispensable tool of empire, policing the great river and acting as floating symbols of British imperial power. They participated in every significant colonial campaign in the region, from the British invasion of Egypt in 1882 to the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, when Britain finally won control of the Sudan. After that, the gunboats helped maintain British control over both Egypt and the Sudan, and played a key role in safeguarding British interests around the headwaters of the Nile – a region hotly contested by several European powers. Featuring specially commissioned artwork, this comprehensive volume offers a detailed analysis of the Nile river gunboats' entire career, from policing British colonial interests along the great river to defending Egypt against the Ottoman Turks in World War I.

Brown Water, Black Berets

Brown Water, Black Berets PDF Author: Thomas J Cutler
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 1612511848
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 563

Book Description
The men of the U.S. Navy's brown-water force played a vital but often overlooked role in the Vietnam War. Known for their black berets and limitless courage, they maneuvered their aging, makeshift craft along shallow coastal waters and twisting inland waterways to search out the enemy. In this moving tribute to their contributions and sacrifices, Tom Cutler records their dramatic story as only a participant could. His own Vietnam experience enables him to add a striking human dimension to the account. The terror of firefights along the jungle-lined rivers, the rigors of camp life, and the sudden perils of guerrilla warfare are conveyed with authenticity. At the same time, the author's training as a historian allows him to objectively describe the scope of the navy's operations and evaluate their effectiveness. Winner of the Navy League's Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement in 1988 when the book was first published, Cutler is credited with having written the definitive history of the brown-water sailors, an effort that has helped readers better understand the nature of U.S. involvement in the war.
