An Elegant Woman

An Elegant Woman PDF Author: Martha McPhee
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1501179594
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
“A portrait of self-creation in the vein of F. Scott Fitzgerald”,” (The Wall Street Journal) An Elegant Woman is “a rich exploration of legacy and memory” (Entertainment Weekly) that follows four generations of women against the sweep of 20th century American history. Drawn from the author’s own family history, this powerful, moving multigenerational saga from National Book Award finalist Martha McPhee masterfully explores the stories we tell ourselves, and what we leave out. As Isadora, a novelist, and two of her sisters sift through the artifacts of their forebears’ lives, trying to decide what to salvage and what to toss, the story shifts to a winter day in 1910 at a train station in Ohio. Two girls wait in the winter cold with their mother—the mercurial Glenna Stewart—to depart for a new life in the West. As Glenna campaigns in Montana for women’s suffrage and teaches in one-room schoolhouses, Tommy takes care of her little sister, Katherine: trapping animals, begging, keeping house, cooking, while Katherine goes to school. When Katherine graduates, Tommy makes a decision that will change the course of both of their lives. Told “with an easy grace many historical novels lack” (Los Angeles Times), An Elegant Woman follows one woman over the course of the 20th century, taking us from a drought-stricken Montana farm to a yellow Victorian in Maine; from the halls of a psychiatric hospital in London to a wedding gown fitting at Bergdorf Goodman; from a house in small town Ohio to a family reunion at a sweltering New Jersey pig roast. Framed by Isadora’s efforts to retell her grandmother’s journey—and understand her own—the novel is “sharp, precise, and, yes, elegant” (The Boston Globe) in its gorgeous depiction of one hundred years in a family’s history.

The Frittata Affair

The Frittata Affair PDF Author: Judy Pochini
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1434344282
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 374

Book Description
When former Sunset Magazine trade publications editor Judy Thompson Hay married chef-trained Bob Pochini and started collaborating with him on four-star quality dinner parties for their family and friends, she realized she had a story on her hands. As a scion of a venerated tradition of restauranteurs, Bob not only could prepare the noteworthy cuisine offered at Pochini's Restaurant for 37 years, he could fuse the concepts of "old-country" Italian dishes with the cutting-edge cuisine and ingredients available in San Francisco, Northern California's gourmet capitol. Early on, Judy started recording the menus of special occasion luncheons and dinners to which she and Bob treated their guests. She understudied Bob as sous chef and began to learn the secrets and techniques of his cuisine. But her perfectionist husband jealously guarded his hard-earned culinary knowledge. Even his children had to show proper humility before he would share his inside information, literally gained by sitting at the feet of his father, the talented and creative Chef Leo. Gaining admittance to Bob's kitchen was a rare privilege. And he definitely did not give away his recipes. After all, one never knew what liberties an untrained recipient might take. That this travesty of preparation could happen came home to him when he shared just one family secret, the frittata recipe. Read about it in Living From Bite to Bite / The Frittata Affair, the keynote chapter of this book. When Bob was diagnosed with inoperable cancer he gave Judy permission to reveal some of the secrets of the Pochini's signature cuisine and their approach to Four-Star Dining at Home. This book with its stories and its presentation of the cuisine carries as well the underlying thread of gentle and loving collaboration between trained chef Bob and sous chef Judy as they presented their many festive dinners. Buon Appetito!

Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures

Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures PDF Author: Nicole T. C. Chiang
Publisher: Hong Kong University Press
ISBN: 988852805X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 167

Book Description
In this stunning reassessment, Nicole T. C. Chiang argues that the famous Qianlong art collection is really ‘the collection of the imperial household in the Qianlong reign’. The distinction is significant because it strips away the modern, Eurocentric preconceptions that have led scholars to misconstrue the size of the collection, the role of nationalism in its formation, the distinction between art and artifact, and the actual involvement of the emperor in assembling the collection. No one interested in Chinese art will be able to ignore the ramifications of this important study. Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures: Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household argues that the size of the collection was actually smaller than previously stated. Moreover, the idea that the collection put the whole of the empire on display (and thereby promoted political unity) does not square with the reality that most of the collection was hidden away. Instead, the collection was primarily for the emperor’s gaze alone. Chiang further explains that the collection was largely the product of work done by many specialists working at the Qianlong court, noting that the emperor often assumed a more supervisory role. Preliminary drawings, patterns, models, and prototypes of the items made in the imperial workshops also formed an important part of the collection, as they served to establish standardized models used to run the imperial household. The collection was thus both broader and narrower than previously stated. ‘Chiang has identified many misguided assumptions about the Qing imperial collection. In their place, she proposes a new definition of an imperial collection that does not give primacy to art objects. This bold revisionist thesis may be controversial, but it is important and deserves to be read widely for this exact reason.’ —Dorothy Ko, Barnard College, Columbia University ‘Chiang makes a new argument which will contribute to the literature on Qing imperial art. She shows that a distinction should be made between the Qianlong emperor’s activities in commissioning objects from the palace workshop and his activities in accumulating, assessing, and cataloguing objects that went into what she calls the “imperial household collection.” This work will attract wide attention from scholars in art history.’ —Evelyn S. Rawski, University of Pittsburgh
