Not illustrated. 1863 edition. Excerpt: ... by its own spring, and is opened by pressing the two blades together. Ligature of the vessel.--This may be done, by laying the artery bare, applying the ligature, and dividing the artery below it. Again, the two ligatures may be applied, and the vessel divided between them; and finally the artery may be cut, then seized with a tenaculum and drawn out, and the ligature tied above the bleeding orifice. The application of ligatures, will be more freely and thoroughly discussed when the subject of "Hemorrhage after an operation " is considered. This forcep is applicable to arteries of all sizes, and is the surest of the methods employed for arresting the flow of blood. Tie the main artery first, then find its principal branches, and finally seek out every bleeding orifice. The Ligature was first used by Ambrose Pare in amputations, but the mode of its application has been variously modified by other Surgeons. Ligatures are immediate or mediate. To apply the immediate Ligature, sponge out the wound well; have the pressure on the artery slightly diminished, so as to permit the blood to flow; seize the artery either with a pair of forceps or the tenaculum; draw it out; and having passed the thread under the instrument, make first a loose knot, then direct the loop over the artery and tie it firmly twice, --an assistant placing his finger on the first knot to prevent its slipping. The instrument may then be withdrawn, and the compression removed to make sure that the artery' is completely obliterated. With regard to small arteries, that cannot be readily separated from the soft parts, a portion of the cellular tissue may be included in the ligature with them. The mediate ligature is applied thus. Pass two ends of the ligature through curved...

Book Description
Excerpt from Contributions of Practical Surgery Several of the following essays appeared originally in the American Journal of the Medical Sciences. Those upon the occurrence of Non-union after Fractures, and the Statisti cal Results of Operations upon the larger Arteries, and upon Fmtnres and Amputations, have met with favorable notice abroad as well as at home, and have been freely made use of by later writers, in some instances with but slight notice of their sources. The statistical method of investigation at the time of their publication was something of a novelty in surgery, and was looked upon with suspicion; but it is now everywhere accepted as one of value in all departments of research. Much labor was expended in the collection of these statistics and in their careful analysis. They are now reprinted for reference and comparison with more recent investigations. There have been added a paper on Compound Fractures, a large amount of new material on the Occurrence of False Joints, and numerous Clinical Histories drawn from a hospital service of thirty years, which, it is hoped, may not prove uninteresting to the practitioner. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual for the Practice of Surgery I am well aware that I have failed to realize in the execution of my task the ideal standard I at starting proposed to myself, and I knew, when I first under took to write the book, how difficult it was to compress the treatment of the vast range of subjects included. Under the title of Surgery into one volume, but my object was to Offer such an epitome of the main principles and methods Of practice as should be serviceable to the student and practitioner; and from the reception the first edition of this work, published in November, 1872, has met with in Great Britain and America, I feel justified in saying that I have not failed in the attempt, and that the book Supplied a want felt by the professional public. To the many reviewers who have acknowledged my labors so fairly and so fully my thanks are clearly due, but still more to the profession, which has wel comed my humble services so kindly. Fully alive, therefore, to the generous appreciation of my past work, and assur ing my readers that no pains have been spared to bring the present up to as high a standard as my time and Opportunities have allowed, I submit it in all confidence to the kind consideration of mv professional brethren as no unworthy exposition of modern British surgery.
