In der Frage, wie sich die Reformation auf den Alltag der damaligen Menschen, ihre Wahrnehmung und ihre Selbstrepräsentation ausgewirkt hat, wurden Gegenstände der materiellen Kultur bisher nur am Rande berücksichtigt. Komplementär zu den Schriftquellen vermögen Sachgüter jedoch beredte Auskunft darüber zu geben, wie sich konfessionelle Zugehörigkeit bzw. Distinktion gegenüber Andersgläubigen visuell manifestieren konnte und wie rasch sich in den einzelnen Regionen die Forderungen der Reformatoren - etwa in Hinblick auf den Kleiderluxus oder die Bilderfrage - durchgesetzt haben und verselbständigten. Sie zeigen ferner, in welchen Räumen und in welchen Medien die konfessionelle Auseinandersetzung geführt wurde, liefern aber auch Hinweise darauf, wo Elemente des alten Glaubens in protestantische Kulturpraktiken eingeflossen sind bzw. wo es durch die Reformation zu einer "Entzauberung" gekommen ist. Auch für die jüngst wieder aufgeflammte Debatte, ob die Reformation nur eine Episode in einem längeren Wandlungsprozess war oder ob sie als epochales Ereignis zu werten ist, das in vielerlei Hinsicht einen raschen Wandel in Gang setzte, hält die materielle Kultur ein reiches Aussagepotential bereit.

When Martin Luther mounted his challenge to the Catholic Church, reform stimulated a range of responses, including radical solutions such as those proposed by theologians of the Anabaptist movement. But how did ordinary Anabaptists, men and women, grapple with the theological and emotional challenges of the Lutheran Reformation? Anabaptism developed along unique lines in the Lutheran heartlands in central Germany, where the movement was made up of scattered groups and did not centre on charismatic leaders as it did elsewhere. Ideas were spread more often by word of mouth than by print, and many Anabaptists had uneven attachment to the movement, recanting and then relapsing. Historiography has neglected Anabaptism in this area, since it had no famous leaders and does not seem to have been numerically strong. Baptism, Brotherhood, and Belief challenges these assumptions, revealing how Anabaptism's development in central Germany was fundamentally influenced by its interaction with Lutheran theology. In doing so, it sets a new agenda for understandings of Anabaptism in central Germany, as ordinary individuals created new forms of piety which mingled ideas about brotherhood, baptism, the Eucharist, and gender and sex. Anabaptism in this region was not an isolated sect but an important part of the confessional landscape of the Saxon lands, and continued to shape Lutheran pastoral affairs long after scholarship assumed it had declined. The choices these Anabaptist men and women made sat on a spectrum of solutions to religious concerns raised by the Reformation. Understanding their decisions, therefore, provides new insights into how religious identities were formed in the Reformation era.

This collection of essays offers a series of rigorously focused art-historical, historical, and philosophical studies that examine ways in which materiality has posed and still poses a religious and cultural problem. The volume examines the material agency of objects, artifacts, and environments: art, ritual, pilgrimage, food, and philosophy. It studies the variable "senses” of materiality, the place of materiality in the formation of modern Western religion, and its role in Christianity’s dialogue with non-Western religions. This volume is the first English language presentation of the innovative approaches developed in the aesthetics of religion. The chapters present diverse material and detailed analysis on descriptive, methodological and theoretical concepts that together explore the potential of an aesthetic approach for investigating religion as a sensory and mediated practice. In dialogue with, yet different from, other major movements in the field (material culture, anthropology of the senses, for instance), it is the specific intent of this approach to create a framework for understanding the interplay between sensory, cognitive and socio-cultural aspects of world-construction. Niels Hemmingsen (1513-1600) is one of the most influential Danish theologians in history. As a professor at the University of Copenhagen, Hemmingsen played an important role in moulding Danish society according to his understanding of Lutheranism during the second half of the sixteenth century. Drawing on sociology of knowledge, cultural memory, and confessional culture, Mattias Skat Sommer examines Hemmingsen's works and life in political and theological contexts. By studying Hemmingsen's role in forming a discourse of social interaction, the author argues that Hemmingsen was the leading agent in shaping post-Reformation Danish confessionalization. Historical burial grounds are an enormous archaeological resource and have the potential to inform studies not only of demography or the history of disease and mortality, but also histories of the body, of religious and other beliefs about death, of changing social relationships, values and aspirations.
