Im Gegenteil: in einigen Teilen der Welt erfährt er offensichtlich starken Zulauf. Besonders offensichtlich wird dieser „Schriftfundamentalismus“ bei der Frage nach der Entstehung der Welt und ihrem Urheber und der theistischen Kreationismusthese. Sie behauptet, dass Gott der Schöpfer der Welt ist und dass das „Wort Gottes“ den faktischen Hergang der Entstehung der Welt beschreibt. Dieser Fundamentalismus ist nicht religionsspezifisch und daher ein nicht lokal begrenztes Phänomen. Diese Arbeit wird sich in diesem Bereich vorrangig mit der US-amerikanischen, christlichen Kreationismusbewegung befassen, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten mehr und mehr gesellschaftlichen und politischen Einfluss erlangte. Dieser Umstand zwang die amerikanische Gesellschaft in eine langwierige (und noch immer nicht beendete) Debatte um ihre Wertebasis. Eine zweite, von den Kreationisten prinzipiell unabhängige, in den USA einflussreiche Gruppierung, die in dieser Arbeit behandelt werden soll, sind die Anhänger der „Intelligent Design-“ oder „ID-Theorie“. Diese Theorie baut auf der gleichen philosophischen Basis auf wie der Kreationismus, i.e. dass die Welt, so wie sie jetzt existiert, geschaffen wurde. Die definierenden prinzipiellen Unterschiede sind dabei a) dass das Intelligent Design einen theoretischen (d.h. nichtreligiösen) Unterbau zu schaffen sucht, sowie b) die Vermeidung jedes expliziten Gottesbezugs. Auf diese Weise entgeht die ID-Theorie dem praktischen Problem der gesetzlich verankerten Trennung von Kirche und Staat. Dies ist vor allem im Rahmen staatlicher Schulen von Bedeutung, da die ID-Theorie –einmal als wissenschaftliche Theorie anerkannt- ihren Weg in verbindliche Curricula finden könnte. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Beantwortung der Frage, ob die erwähnten Theorien wissenschaftlich korrekt sind. Genügen sie diesem Anspruch, spräche nichts gegen ihre Implementierung in verpflichtende Curricula. Genügen sie jedoch wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen nicht, wäre die Gleichbehandlung von Evolutionstheorie und Intelligent Design bzw. Kreationismus in staatlichen Schulen nicht vertretbar.

Competition seems to be an inevitable part of present-day elections in the United States. However, recent publications have debated whether we should encourage or discourage competitive elections. In Competitive Elections and Democracy in America, Heather Evans closely examines the debate over competition in elections and questions whether or not they are beneficial for democracy in the US.
