Excerpt from First Book on Analytic Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene, Human and Comparative: For Common and Grammar Schools and for Families This manual, designed for Common and Grammar Schools and for families, has been prepared with several objects in view. First: To so limit its size, to make its analysis so complete, to secure so natural an arrangement, with so apposite and artistic illustrations, as to render it usable in Common Schools having terms of ten or fourteen weeks, and also to present such topics for consideration as shall interest and profit pupils, parents and the people in the laws of health, which are based upon a knowledge of the laws of physiology. Second: To secure these results, the outlines of the human system are discussed relative to structure, to use and to health, with so much of Comparative Anatomy (Zoology) as is deemed needful to show the analogy that exists between man and the inferior animals, and to appetite for more extended study in the science of life. The treatment of some of the common ills of life, of wounded, poisoned and asphyxiated persons, is briefly discussed in their appropriate chapters. Another object in view has been to make the style clear, concise and adapted to the references made to illustrative figures, to teach the pupil the correct word, though it may be a technical term, believing it is best to use those terms which express the ideas that are peculiar to the study. As the study of objects is more simple and impressive than mere words, and as illustrations are more instructive, particularly to children, than written sentences, this work has been so arranged as to be used advantageously, with OBJECT study and topical instruction, especially with Outline Anatomical Charts, both human and comparative. As use is the test on a text-book, this manual is respectfully submitted to teachers and to patrons of schools. Excerpt from New Analytic Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene: Human and Comparative; For Colleges, Academies and Families; With Questions The solicitation of my publishers, and the request of many teachers, have induced me to review and remodel my schoolbook on Outline Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene, adapting it to the advanced position of teachers, schools and the community. My former work was published in 1849, and thoroughly revised in 1852. Several hundred thousand copies of the revised edition have been published. It has been translated and published in five different languages, by the missionaries in Asia and Europe. In general arrangement, the present Treatise is modeled after the former. The aim has been to improve the analysis; to bring the Chemistry and Histology to the present advanced state of these sciences; to make the Anatomy and Physiology concise and definite, the Hygiene plain and practical; to introduce some Comparative Anatomy; and to furnish illustrating cuts, both apposite and artistic.
