Book Description
Excerpt from How to Catalogue a Library Another vulgar error is that cataloguers form a guild, with secrets which they wish to keep from the public. This is a grievous mistake. The main Object Of the good cataloguer should be to make the consultation Of his work easy. He knows the difficulties, and knows that rules must be made to overcome these difficulties but he does not care to mul tiply these rules more than is absolutely necessary. The good cataloguer will try to put himself into the place Of the intelligent consulter - that is, the person who brings ordinary intelligence to bear upon the catalogue, but has not, neces sarily, any technical knowledge. Some persons seem to think that everything is to be brought down to the comprehension Of the fool but if by doing this we make4 flow to Catalogue a Library. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Library Cataloguing Generally I find a library catalogue is assumed to be a thing that is somehow 'made' at a single stroke, as Aladdin's palace was built, at intervals of ten or a dozen years, or whenever a 'new catalogue is thought to be needed, instead of, as he proceeds to show, being a never' ending work calling for the exercise of all the power and knowledge at the command of the cataloguer. Book Description
"Catalogue of the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia" was originally compiled by the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia located in Pennsylvania. This book acts as an "index" to the books and other materials inside the library rather than a than a true catalog of books. This publication was prepared to help readers find not only the books the library holds but also to ascertain the subject matter of each book and find other books grouped into similar subjects. This system was developed to assist readers in determining which books they would be interested in much more readily than they were able to do via the previous system. Every book held by the Mercantile Library is included here and can be located either under the name of the author or under the leading word of the title. All entries are thorough in their attempts to fully identify the book and present a clear idea of the book's scope and purpose. The publication also presents sidebar entries that explain certain topics in more detail and offer further exploration of a given book for the reader. Because a library collection is a constantly changing and evolving entity, this book provides more of an historic glimpse of the collection than one that is currently accurate. "Catalogue of the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia" is an interesting read for individuals intrigued by libraries, library collections, and library history. This book is very well organized in its approach and relatively easy to navigate for the interested reader. For anyone who wants to know all of the books contained within the vast collection at the Mercantile Library of Philadelphia near the end of the nineteenth century - this is the book for you! Cataloging for Small Libraries (Classic Reprint)

Cataloging for Small Libraries (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Theresa Hitchler

Book Description
Excerpt from Cataloging for Small Libraries During the past ten years the author has lectured on the sub jcet of cataloging before many an audience of trained as well as untrained, experienced as well as inexperienced librarians of small libraries, students preparing for such work, trustees of small libraries, and others. The questions asked at such gatherings prove conclusively that the small library does not by any means presuppose a collection of simple books, as is too often taken for granted. If that were so, the simple directions given in the first edition of this work would need no amplification. Experience, however, has shown otherwise, and even trained librarians find themselves timidly doubtful at times in deciding a point, because lack of practice, experience and precedent are wanting to inspire the necessary confidence. Therefore, though this treatise is not intended to be at all dogmatic, I have attempted in this book to outline very fully, but in simple language, with not too embarrassing a number of illustrative examples, the best methods of treating various problems in cataloging, the complex as well as the simple ones, for the librarian of the small library who is ambitious to have her library a well cataloged one in as systematic, useful, yet economical a way as possible. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Handbook of Modern Library Cataloging In setting examinations in library science, including cataloging, for the United States Civil Service Commission for several years, I was constantly struck by the absence in our professional literature of any manual of the actual practice of cataloging. There are numerous codes of rules and articles on the theory of cataloging. But something which should tell a student of library administration just what has to be done under modem conditions and why it should be done seemed lacking. I have accordingly written this brief handbook in an endeavor to supply this need. To librarians and catalogers trained in their work by long years of service much of what is here set forth will doubtless seem very obvious and commonplace. I have had constantly in mind two sorts of persons by whom librarians have been much besought for years past for information as to "how to do it." One group - and by far the larger - is composed of young people entering on the professional study of library processes either in library schools or without formal instruction. Book Description
Excerpt from The Catalogue of the Melbourne: Public Library for 1861 - "There studious let me sit, And hold high converse with the Mighty Dead, Sages of antient time, as Gods rever'd, As Gods beneficent, who blest mankind With arts, with arms, and humaniz'd world." Thomson's "Winter." The establishment of a Public Library in Victoria, supported by the State, and stamped with the characteristics of a National Institution, was made the subject of curly consideration by our first governor, Mr. Latrobe. Fully impressed with the importance of. the influence likely to arise from voluntary adult mental improvement, as well as of the intellectual and moral elevation to be created by a cultivation of the works of standard authors, he placed upon the Estimates of the year 1853, a sum of three thousand pounds ( 3,000) for the purchase of books, and ten thousand pounds ( 10,000) towards the erection of a suitable building to contain them. These sums were cheerfully voted by Parliament; and, recognising and approving the liberality of sentiment which originated the design, two further sums, equal in amount, were in the ensuing year generously provided for the like purposes.
