Book Description
In this collection of essays, edited by Jianwei Wang and Yufan Hao, the contributor's explore the driving factors that lie behind Macao's increased visibility, including: the rapid economic development and growth, the "one country, two system" administration under which they operate, the influx of foreign investment, and the role of Macao in China's foreign policy, especially as it relates to the United States. Macao underwent tremendous growth in various spheres during its evolution from a minor colonial power into a global player with increasing influence on the world stage. Their enhanced international profile is largely a result of their economic and political development over the 20th century, culminating with their handover to China in 1999. With more than 60 countries that have established consular services in Macao, and their membership in several international organizations -- WTO, UNESDO, and the World Tourism Organization) -- Macao continues to play an important role in the Eastern hemisphere. Macao's entrance into the world market improved their reputation in East Asia and led to spectacular economic growth, but it also attracted foreign investment, especially from the United States, that changed the cultural landscape. American influence has grown steadily in Macao, and with their increased exposure to international economics and politics, Macao's role as a buffer between China and United States is increasingly important. Macao and U.S.-Chinese Relations uses a local perspective to analyze the complicated relationship between these two world superpowers and Chinese foreign policy as a whole.

Macao - The Formation of a Global City PDF Author: C.X. George Wei

Book Description
Macao, the former Portuguese colony in southeast China, has a long and very interesting history of cultural interaction between China and the West. Held by the Portuguese from the 1550s until its return to China in 1999, Macao was up to the emergence of Hong Kong in the later nineteenth century the principal point of entry into China for all Westerners - Dutch, British and others, as well as Portuguese. The relatively relaxed nature of Portuguese colonial rule, intermarriage, the mixing of Chinese and Western cultures, and the fact that Macao served as a safe haven for many Chinese reformers at odds with the Chinese authorities, including Sun Yat-sen, all combined to make Macao a very different and special place. This book explores how Macao was formed over the centuries. It puts forward substantial new research findings and new thinking, and covers a wide range of issues. It is a companion volume to Macao - Cultural Interaction and Literary Representations.

China's Macao Transformed PDF Author: Eilo W.Y.YU

Book Description
The return of Macao from the Portuguese administration to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999 marks the beginning of its transformation in the 21st century. Macao was confronted with various issues concerning then existing political system, economic downturn and gangland violence during the transition period. Beijing put Macao under the "One country, Two Systems" and implemented a wide variety of measures in order to restore its law and order as well as to recover its tourism dependent economy. Gradually, Macao transformed itself to "Las Vegas of the East". This volume of 18 essays highlights the key dimensions of Macao's remarkable "One country, Two Systems" actualisation experience in its first 15 years, and discusses how Macao transformed and what challenges it encountered during its post-handover transformation. The volume has several focuses. It first investigates the political and electoral issues in a critical manner─ post-handover Macao suffered from maladministration and limited democratization, and the chief executives selected lacked representativeness due to restricted public participation in the electoral process. Overall speaking, the government lacked legitimacy and popular support. From a socio-economic point of view, this book looks into the business model in running Macao's casinos and the emerging culture of mass participation and youth participation in political affairs. The education reformation and changes in civic identity of local Macao Chinese are also addressed. Finally, the volume looks into how post-handover Macao relates itself in the international politics affair.

Sentenced to death in 1965 at age twenty for an unpremeditated murder during the bungled holdup of a convenience store, Billy Wayne spent his first seven prison years on death row. When the death penalty was abolished, his sentence was life. Three-and-a-half decades later, Billy Wayne is still behind bars—feared by many politicians and prison officials for his well-known incorruptibility and unrelenting crusade for prison reform. This is his memoir. A Life in the Balance begins with an almost unbearable account of his early years—when he was so abused by his father one wonders how he survived—and his “escape” into a crowd of hooligans, which led him to the fateful day in 1965 when he held up the convenience store. His story takes you behind the metal doors of the Angola State Penitentiary to reveal the brutal truth of life inside. Here you will meet Billy Ray, Billy Wayne’s blood brother; old Emmitt Henderson, who died of prison neglect; Jamie Parks, a seventeen-year-old kid whose fate was sealed the day he arrived in Angola; Big Mick, who ran drugs in the prison to earn money to put his handicapped sister through colle≥ Wilbert Rideau, Billy Wayne’s coeditor on The Angolite; the Dixie Mafia; and Richard Clark Hand, the young lawyer who took on Billy Wayne’s case and has been fighting for his release for thirty years.
