My Life as an OB-GYN

My Life as an OB-GYN PDF Author: Douglas Heritage
Publisher: Atlantic Publishing Company
ISBN: 1620232618
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
For most women, a visit to the OB-GYN is a dreaded experience. It invokes images of sitting on an examination table in a flimsy, tissue paper gown, of staring nervously at the dreaded “stirrups,” of feeling exposed, of being poked and prodded, and of being asked embarrassing questions about sex and reproduction. If it is a first visit, the patient will inevitably wonder: “What is my doctor really like? Is he cold and clinical or friendly and down to earth? How did he become a doctor? And why?” In a book that is as eye-opening as it is compelling, retired OB-GYN Douglas Edwin Heritage invites us to share the joy, humor, and tragedy of his 43-year career as a medical student, intern, resident, and physician in private practice. Through a series of short vignettes, Heritage leads us through experiences ranging from the unconventional pranks of medical school to the solemnity of pronouncing his first patient. He candidly brings to life the colorful and often bizarre encounters that define the unique medical subculture of obstetrics and gynecology. Stimulating, irreverent, and often droll, My Life as an OB-GYN will delight both practitioners and laymen alike.

Assume the Position

Assume the Position PDF Author: Richard Houck

Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
"Assume the Position: Memoirs of an Obstetrician" will place the reader in the shoes of an Obstetrician and Gynecologist with years of clinical experience and training. It will also place the reader in the same stirrups as patients in my office, listening to the trials, tribulations, joys, and fears expressed to me. All women wonder what other women experience when they see their OB GYN physician. All men wonder what his girlfriend or wife will be subjected to when exposed in front of their 'Gyno'. The stresses and strains of a busy professional life on an Obstetrician Gynecologist are revealed in intimate, true detail. The story begins after early retirement from one of the busiest group practices in Phoenix, Arizona and a move to the beautiful high alpine ski town of Telluride, Colorado, after an ultimatum from my wife. From there the story continues to the depths of Africa to explore women's health care in a small country with some of the worst obstetrical and neonatal outcomes in the world. Timely topics subsequently discussed include office life, operating room experiences, the medical malpractice crisis, abortion, the family life of an obstetrician, labor and delivery, night life, the business of medicine, Obamacare, managed care, and life after private practice. Each chapter is punctuated with true, unfiltered vignettes, laughable, joyful, fearful, and tearful, that can only be found in the life of an OB-GYN physician as he goes throughout his day. I am an actively licensed, American Board Certified Obstetrician Gynecologist. A graduate of Princeton University, I was trained at two of the top medical institutions in Philadelphia, after which my wife and I picked up our East Coast roots and moved to begin anew in the desert of Arizona. After 21 years of private practice, involved in all aspects of practice management and women's health care and research, I chose to leave it all behind and begin a second career in expert witness medical malpractice testimony, and then a third career as a medical director. I believe you will enjoy the experience of spending some time in my shoes.

My Life in A Gyn Mill Stories and Occasional Musings from a Retired Physician and Unrepentant Curmudgeon

My Life in A Gyn Mill Stories and Occasional Musings from a Retired Physician and Unrepentant Curmudgeon PDF Author: William J. Cone
Publisher: Seaboard Press
ISBN: 9781596638297
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 106

Book Description
Take a brief look at a life spent in the "Gyn Mill" as Dr. Cone shares stories about medical school, hilarious tales from his practice and thoughts about the current transition from "caring to commercial" in the health care community. From the book: Talking with my patients about their lives and families was a great pleasure. Thanks to the bureaucrats and minute counters, this experience in many offices has gone the way of the buggy whips. A most upbeat older patient, after elaborating some of her problems, looked up at me and said, "But you know, with the troubles I have, I'm grateful wrinkles don't hurt." The loyalty of long-time patients was once exhibited by an octogenarian and her friend, also a patient, who told me, "Lena and I are furious with you for retiring. We decided we would rather change husbands than gynecologists." Late night call: "My wife is in terrible pain." "Please put her on, I need to talk to her." "Oh, she's asleep." Duh! About the Author: William J. Cone is a retired (unemployed) Ob/Gyn physician. He has had essays, critiques and profiles published in several magazines and is also the author of So You're Retiring ... A Guy's Guide to Being at Home (Seaboard Press). He enjoys writing, reading, gardening, playing tennis and collecting first editions. Currently, he resides in Tennessee but lived in New Orleans earlier in his career.
