Charms, Charmers and Charming in Ireland

Charms, Charmers and Charming in Ireland PDF Author: John Carey
Publisher: University of Wales Press
ISBN: 1786834936
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
This is the first book to examine the full range of the evidence for Irish charms, from medieval to modern times. As Ireland has one of the oldest literatures in Europe, and also one of the most comprehensively recorded folklore traditions, it affords a uniquely rich body of evidence for such an investigation. The collection includes surveys of broad aspects of the subject (charm scholarship, charms in medieval tales, modern narrative charms, nineteenth-century charm documentation); dossiers of the evidence for specific charms (a headache charm, a nightmare charm, charms against bleeding); a study comparing the curses of saints with those of poets; and an account of a newly discovered manuscript of a toothache charm. The practices of a contemporary healer are described on the basis of recent fieldwork, and the connection between charms and storytelling is foregrounded in chapters on the textual amulet known as the Leabhar Eoin, on the belief that witches steal butter, and on the nature of the belief that effects supernatural cures.

Book Description
Impreasin na Gaeilge / Impressions of the Irish language (2014) is a research book on the sound of the Irish language based on native voices of the Gael from the Gaeltacht itself. The book is based on empirical work by two authors from County Clare. An tAthair Seóirse Mac Clúin based Réilthíní Óir on the Irish of the Great Blasket Islands. Réilthíní Óir comprised the native Irish of Tomás Ó Criomhthain and the islanders of the Great Blasket Islands prior to 1922. The original title is revised in full with modern additions based on current native Irish (2007-2014). The language planning researcher is Seosamh Mac Ionnrachtaigh from Kilrush West Clare. This combined research results in an Irish-Irish Dictionary of the Irish language with key explanations in English.

Grand Opportunity

Grand Opportunity PDF Author: Timothy G. McMahon
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 9780815631842
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
In this groundbreaking work, Timothy McMahon reexamines the significance of the Gaelic revival in forming Ireland’s national identity. In their determination to preserve and extend the use of Irish as a spoken language and artistic medium, members of the Gaelic League profoundly influenced Irish culture and literature in the twentieth century. McMahon explores that influence by scrutinizing the ways in which society absorbed their messages, tracing the interaction between the ideas propagated by the League and the variety of meanings ordinary people attached to Ireland and to being Irish. Comparing press and police reports with census data and local directories, the author establishes the first comprehensive profile of League membership. McMahon’s ability to access both English- and Irish-language sources offers readers a rare and richly detailed analysis of primary materials. Grand Opportunity addresses questions that are central to understanding modern Irish identity and makes an indispensable contribution to the wider study of national identity formation.

Gaelic Prose in the Irish Free State

Gaelic Prose in the Irish Free State PDF Author: Philip O'Leary
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 0271030100
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 768

Book Description
This is an authoritative account of the a major, but neglected aspect of the Irish cultural renaissance- prose literature of the Gaelic Revival. The period following the War of Independence and Civil War saw an outpouring of book-length works in Irish from the state publishing agency An Gum. The frequency and production of new plays, both original and translated, have never been approached since. This book investigates all of these works as well as journalism and manuscript material and discusses them in a lively and often humorous manner. -- Publisher description
