Book Description
Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of the War 1861-65 I launch this little volume upon the great ocean of books, craving the indulgence of the kind reader for its shortcomings and imperfections, with the hope that it will not be viewed with a critic's eye, and that its imperfections may be charitably passed by. I have endeavored to relate my experiences in the great war of 1861-5 just as events occurred, as if I were detailing them to family or friends in private, or, as I have sometimes done in the past, at gatherings of veterans and friends during the past years. The old huntsman delights to tell of his tracking game in the snow, the chase through the woods and fields of the fox, deer and bear; the old sailor spins his yarns of the adventures and perils of the deep; the old fisherman will sometimes tell a big fish tale, and the old soldier is wont to join in with the rest and tell of his life in camp and field. This last I have endeavored to do in the following pages after the lapse of many years. I might have spun out the story much longer, but believing that brevity is often the soul of writing, as well as of wit, I have endeavored to be "brief and to the point." Book Description
Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of a Maryland Soldier in the War Between the States, 1861-1865: For Private Circulation Only With the greatest regard for truthfulness, I can say that never for one moment did the question of slavery or the per petuation of that institution enter into the decision of my course. When the first blow was struck at Sumter, and men were forced to take sides in the approaching conflict, that which impelled to decision was the love of freedom, and the constitution of my country, as I understood it, as opposed to the vindictiveness of the northern politician and his hatred of our southern brethren, as evidenced in the disregard of public faith and the coercive measures which were being set on foot to bring them under the rod. As a member of the military force of the State, I promptly responded to the call to arms, to maintain the public peace, and to prevent the passage of northern troops through its territory, and when the efforts of our authorities became futile, and their functions were usurped by the federal gov ernment; when it became apparent, without question, that the hope of State action was impracticable, by reason of this military occupation, then, without hesitation, I chose to cast my fortune with the south and to bear a part in the great struggle. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity. Book Description
Excerpt from General Lee, His Campaigns in Virginia: 1861-1865; With Personal Reminiscences Nearly thirty years ago I ventured to publish Four Years with General Lee, in which my primary Object was to assist in establishing the fact of the great numerical Odds against which the army under General Lee had to contend in its encounters with the Federal armies opposed to it. General Lee had expressed a purpose to do this, and after his death, before its accomplishment, the duty seemed logically to devolve upon me. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of 1861-1865 Yielding to the suggestions of many companions and friends, who read my war reminiscences in The Buchanan News and Fincastle Herald, I have concluded to publish them in pamphlet form. They do not pretend to anything more than a personal illustration of what passed before the eyes of the writer, who bore an inconspicuous part in the bloody drama that was written on the pages of American history, 1861 to 1865. This second edition is published fifty-two years after the incidents herein mentioned occurred. In the past half century, the checkerboard of personal events in the writer's life is radiant with events of peril, pathos and pleasure, mingled with success and misfortune that has ebbed and flowed, rendering his life somewhat similar to Thackaray's "Story of Philip On His Way Through the World," who helped him, who kicked him, and who passed him by. If spared to reach my four-score years it is probable I will write and leave them as a legacy for the next generation. Book Description
Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 My War Reminiscences as originally written were not intended for publication. During all the years sub sequent to the close of the War I had been asked from time to time by my daughters, Lottie and Edith, to write down the stories I had told them of my war experiences; I had written from time to time in complying with their wishes, descriptions of many of the movements and battles, and as I progressed the work became interesting to myself, until it finally assumed the form of a complete story from the beginning to the end, and still it was my purpose that there should be but an edition of two vol umes, typewritten and bound, for my daughters only.
