Global Perspectives on Reforming the Criminal Justice System

Global Perspectives on Reforming the Criminal Justice System PDF Author: Pittaro, Michael
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1799868869
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
The often-tenuous relationship between law enforcement and communities of color, namely African Americans, has grown increasingly strained, and the call for justice has once again ignited the demand for criminal justice reform. Rebuilding the trust between the police and the citizens that they have sworn to protect and serve requires that criminal justice practitioners and educators collaborate with elected officials and commit to an open, ongoing dialogue on the most challenging issues that remain unresolved but demand collective attention and support. Reform measures are not limited to policing policies and practices, but rather extend throughout the criminal justice system. There is no denying that the criminal justice system as we know it is flawed, but not beyond repair. Global Perspectives on Reforming the Criminal Justice System provides in-depth and current research about the criminal justice system around the world, its many inadequacies, and why it urgently needs reformation. Offering a fully fleshed outline of the current system, this book details the newest research and is incredibly important to fully understand the flaws of the criminal justice system across the globe. The goals of this book are to improve and advance the criminal justice system by addressing the glaring weaknesses within the system and discuss potential reforms including decreasing the prison population (decarceration) and improving police/community relations. Highlighting topics that include accountability, community-oriented policing, ethics, and mass incarceration, this book is ideal for law enforcement officers, trainers/educators, government officials, policymakers, correctional officers, court officials, professionals, researchers, academicians, and students in the fields of criminal justice, criminology, sociology, psychology, addictions, mental health, social work, public policy, and public administration.

Urbanisation and Crime in Nigeria

Urbanisation and Crime in Nigeria PDF Author: Adegbola Ojo
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030197654
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
This book uses crime-science and traditional criminological approaches to explore urban crime in the rapidly urbanising country Nigeria, as a case study for urban crime in developing nations. In Africa’s largest democracy, rapid unmanaged growth in its cities combined with decaying public infrastructure mean that risk factors accumulate and deepen the potential for urban crime. This book includes a thorough explanation of key concepts alongside an examination of the contemporary configuration, dynamics, dimensions, drivers and potential responses to urban crime challenges. The authors also discuss a range of methodological techniques and applications that can be used, including spatial technologies to generate new data for analysis. It brings together history, theory, trends, patterns, drivers, repercussions and responses to provide a deep analysis of the challenges that confront urban dwellers. Urbanisation and Crime in Nigeria offers academics, researchers, governments, civil society organisations, citizens, and international partners a tool with which to engage in a serious dialogue about crime within cities, based on evidence and good practices from inside and outside sub-Saharan Africa.

Police and Community Relations on Crime Prevention and Control in Nigeria PDF Author: Aliyu Ishaq Abdullahi
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3346986322
Category : Political Science

Pages : 87

Book Description
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: B, , course: Sociology, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to assess the efforts of the Nigerian Police Force and community members towards crime prevention in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State. The objectives are to examine the collaboration between Nigerian Police Force and community members on crime prevention and control in Bosso Local Government Area, Niger State and to find out the role of community members towards crime prevention and control in the study area. Furthermore the paper wants to identify the challenges faced by the Nigerian Police Force towards crime prevention and control in the study area and to understand the problems faced by community members towards crime prevention and control in the study area. Crime in every society portrays a great effect capable of disturbing peaceful co-existence and development of the society. No one feels safe in a society that is characterized by criminality. For this, every society adopts measures it deems fit for addressing it. Crime itself is a fuzzy phenomenon as criminologist and sociologist contend with what action or inaction account for a crime as it is diverse, subjective, relative, and depends largely on perspectives, events or legal analysis. Regardless of these complexities, crime refers to a negation of what the law of a society states or an aberration of expected societal conduct. In recent years, the international community has recognized that development in general, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in particular are contingent on the establishment of safety and securities in societies. High level of violence in cities and communities are detrimental to social and economic progress as well as the well-being of citizens. As stated in the report of the Secretary General on the Rule of Law and Transitional Justice in Post Conflict Societies: "prevention is the first imperative of the Criminal Justice".

Community Policing in Indigenous Communities

Community Policing in Indigenous Communities PDF Author: Mahesh K. Nalla
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439888949
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 399

Book Description
Indigenous communities are typically those that challenge the laws of the nation states of which they have become—often very reluctantly—a part. Around the world, community policing has emerged in many of these regions as a product of their physical environments and cultures. Through a series of case studies, Community Policing in Indigenous Communities explores how these often deeply divided societies operate under the community policing paradigm. Drawing on the local expertise of policing practitioners and researchers across the globe, the book explores several themes with regard to each region: How community policing originated or evolved in the community and how it has changed over time The type of policing style used—whether informal or formal and uniformed or non-uniformed, whether partnerships are developed with local community organizations or businesses, and the extent of covert operations, if any The role played by community policing in the region, including the relative emphasis of calls for service, the extent to which advice and help is offered to citizens, whether local records are kept of citizen movement and locations, and investigation and arrest procedures The community’s special cultural or indigenous attributes that set it apart from other models of community policing Organizational attributes, including status in the "hierarchy of control" within the regional or national organization of policing The positive and negative features of community policing as it is practiced in the community Its effectiveness in reducing and or preventing crime and disorder The book demonstrates that community policing cannot be imposed from above without grassroots input from local citizens. It is a strategy—not simply for policing with consent—but for policing in contexts where there is often little, if any, consent. It is an aspirational practice aimed to help police and communities within contested contexts to recognize that positive gains can be made, enabling communities to live in relative safety.

Nigeria's Resource Wars

Nigeria's Resource Wars PDF Author: Egodi Uchendu
Publisher: Vernon Press
ISBN: 1648891578
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 900

Book Description
'Nigeria’s Resource Wars' reflects on the diversity of conflicts over access to, and allocation of, resources in Nigeria. From the devastating effects of crude oil exploration in the Niger Delta to desertification caused by climate change, and illegal gold mining in Zamfara, to mention a few, Nigeria faces new dimensions of resource-related struggles. The ravaging effects of these resource conflicts between crop farmers and Fulani herders in Nigeria’s Middlebelt and states across Southern Nigeria call for urgent scholarly interventions; with the Fulani cattle breeders’ onslaught altering the histories of many Nigerian families through deaths, loss of homes and investments, and permanent physical incapacity. Currently, there is an almost total breakdown of interethnic relations, with political commentators acknowledging that Nigeria has never been so divided as it presently is in its history. The struggles have now degenerated into kidnaps, armed robbery, and incessant targeted and random killings across the country; compounding the already complex problem of insecurity in Nigeria. The chapters in this volume engage with these issues, presenting the different arguments on resource conflicts in Nigeria. They draw insights from similar conflicts in Nigeria’s colonial/post-independence past and events from around the world to proffer possible solutions to resource-related confrontations in Africa. By offering a collection of different intellectual perspectives on resource conflicts in Nigeria, this volume will be an important reference material for understanding the diversity of thought patterns that underpin the struggle and policy approaches towards resolving conflict situations in Africa. This volume will be of considerable interest to scholars of Africa, researchers in the humanities, social sciences, and conflict studies, and policymakers interested in understanding the resource crisis in Africa.
