I was inspired and moved by the great desire and appreciation these subsistence Haitian farmers had for this meager allotment of seeds. These seeds were life! These seeds were hope! These seeds would bring food to their families, stability to their personal economy, meaning and purpose to their toil. And you better believe that they had prepared their soil. They had plowed the way for the seed to take root and be fruitful. How does the parable of the sower, seed, and soil from Matthew 13 speak to us today? God is the sower of all good seed but partners with us to help farm for the kingdom. I submit that the sowers of God's word could include those who share the word of God with humility and gratitude. They give witness to God's love and the truth of Jesus Christ with compassion, reason, confidence, and courage! They scatter seeds of the gospel and also help cultivate the soil that is our souls. They are not perfect but are genuine. They are those family members, friends, colleagues, strangers, ancestors, and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, who have had a serendipitous part to play in our spiritual formation. The first mention of seed in the Bible is within the context of the first chapter of Genesis when God creates the world that we all live in. In Genesis 1:11 God says, "Let the earth bring forth grass yielding seed". Deuteronomy 24:19 states that when thou cutest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease. Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you. As we prepare for God's harvest, we must create an atmosphere of honor to the Lord at church and in our lives. When we get this, we will not only reap the harvest, but we will do the right thing in God's eyes not only by getting people saved but also by teaching the people to honor the Lord and make Him a priority. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint. As we recognize that we are living in the last days, there are some things that, as the Body of Christ, we need to do. We cannot sit around passively in church, thinking that Jesus will come back for His bride that has been complacent and stagnant.

The Roman Catholic Church has played a unique role in the history of Poland in the twentieth century: the people and the Church drew closer and closer together during Nazi rule, the Stalinist period and the somewhat milder, though strongly anti-religious and repressive Gomulka regime (1956-1970). The power struggle between the Church and the communist government did in fact play a role in shaping world politics, the Polish Church having been the force behind the opposition movement in Poland. Against this background, a Polish pope appeared and made a major contribution to the collapse of communism. The Seeds of Triumph, the most comprehensive recent book on the opposition of Church and State in post-war Poland, compares the characteristics and consequences of this relationship during three different periods: the first and second periods of Gomulka's rule, and the Stalinist era between the two Gomulka periods. It examines the balance of power, studying to what degree the Church and other factors in the political environment influenced governmental policy-making. The author disproves the common stereotype, held at the time, that domestic conditions played only a marginal role.
