Social Pressures and Curriculum Innovation

Social Pressures and Curriculum Innovation PDF Author: Mary Waring
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429844166
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Originally published in 1979. This book is a study of the problems of functional and ideological adaptation of the curriculum in response to social change, based on a close investigation of a particular significant curriculum innovation, set up in 1962: the Nuffield Foundation Science Teaching Project. The book focuses particularly on the development of the O-level chemistry curriculum, which was one of the three founding projects. If sensible decisions are to be made about curriculum development, now and in the future, it is vitally important that we take account of the history of influential curriculum projects. This book deals thoroughly with the various political, social and educational factors influencing the setting up of the Nuffield Foundation Science Teaching Project, the details of its execution (methods, the influence of pressure groups, and of particular individuals) and its outcomes. The content of the secondary curriculum is a perennial topic of interest and this book is a stimulating aid to clear thinking not only as history.

Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
'Because of the insights offered the book under review should be compulsory reading for Ministers of Education and educational planners as well as for students of educational reform. They would find it readable, informative and disturbing. This could well become a classic account of why innovations fail. - Keith Watson, Department of Education Studies and Management, University of Reading Educational investment is now back at the top of the development agenda. The World Conference on Education for All confirmed the commitment of national governments and donors to provide opportunities for all children to enrol in school and reach minimum levels of achievement. This book takes a new look at the problems that confront politicians, planners, curriculum developers and teachers in implementing educational innovations in developing countries. Defining the Curriculum

Defining the Curriculum PDF Author: Ivor Goodson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0415669677
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
This book explores some of the major processes involved in the definition of school subject knowledge. Using historical ethnographic methods, the contributors to the collection highlight and examine some of the factors involved at national, institutional and classroom levels in the making of school subjects. The first section of the book outlines the theoretical and methodological basis for the study off school subjects, and the reasons for and the possibilities of such a study are considered. In the second section some histories of school curricula are presented from a variety of settings - colonial schools in Africa, working-class schools of the nineteenth century, nursery schools - and the conflicting forces of determination and change in school subjects are identified and examined. The third section focuses on the contemporary school situation and the papers isolate and investigate some of the interest groups and social processes which enter into or affect the realization of school knowledge in the classroom.

The Making Of The Curriculum

The Making Of The Curriculum PDF Author: Ivor F Goodson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135720320
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 236

Book Description
The first edition of The Making of Curriculum was published in 1988 and reviewers hailed it as a seminal work in the field. In that work Goodson explored a number of aspects of the so-called traditional subjects and described the way they develop over time to a point where they can be promoted as 'academic' disciplines. He showed that the claim to be academic was in fact the result of a substantial political contest covering a century or more. The traditional subject was, in short, invented. The first edition of this book provided a series of challenging insights for those desiring to make sense of the current debate over schooling. In this new and extended second edition, Bill Pinar adds an illuminating introduction and Goodson brings his argument up-to-date with a discussion of the National Curriculum - 'a contemporary initiative in the making of curriculum.'

Curriculum and Environmental Education

Curriculum and Environmental Education PDF Author: Alan Reid
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351385313
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
This collection traces the development and findings of curriculum studies of environmental education since the mid-1970s. Based on a virtual special issue of the Journal of Curriculum Studies, the volume identifies a series of curriculum challenges for and from environmental education. These include key questions in curriculum politics, planning and implementation, including which educative experiences should a curriculum foster and why; what the scope of a worthwhile curriculum should be and how it should be decided, organised and reworked; why distinctive curricula are provided to different groups of students; and how curriculum should best be enacted and evaluated? The editor and contributors call for renewed attention to the possibilities for future directions in research, in light of previously published work and innovations in scholarship. They also offer critical commentary on curriculum, critique and crisis in environmental education, through new material and previous studies from the journal, by addressing three key themes: perspectives on curriculum and environment education; accounting for curriculum in environmental education; and changes in curriculum for environmental education.
