Sounding Out Japan

Sounding Out Japan PDF Author: Richard Chenhall
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000185516
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
This book takes the reader on a sensory ethnographic tour in Japan and describes the many ways sounds seep into everyday experiences. So many ethnographies describe local worlds with a deep attention to what is seen and what people say, but with a limited understanding of the broader sonic environments that enrich and inform everyday life. Through a focus on sounds, both real and imagined, the volume employs a critical ear to engage with a range of sonically enriched encounters, including crosswalk melodies in streetscapes, announcements and jingles at train stations, water features in gardens, dosimeters in nuclear affected zones, sounds of training in music and martial arts halls and celebrations under blossoming cherry trees. The authors use various analytic frames to understand the communicative and symbolic aspects of sounds and to sense the layers of historical meaning, embodied action and affect associated with sonic environments.

The Australia-Japan Defence and Security Relationship 1945-2021

The Australia-Japan Defence and Security Relationship 1945-2021 PDF Author: Peter McDermott
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000584844
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 177

Book Description
McDermott examines the origins, development and prospects for the Australia and Japan Defence and Security Relationship. In 1945, Japan and Australia were foes; today they are partners in security, defence and military matters, each the other’s most important strategic ally, after the United States. As the region faces threats from an increasingly assertive China, there is a growing prospect of conflict, particularly in Northeast Asia. McDermott discusses how Japan and Australia may cooperate in mil-itary action. Using previously classified government documents, and interviews with those involved in the decisions, as well as his own experiences, McDermott examines how political imperatives have shaped the security side of the A-JDSR. He offers new insights into the history and future of the relationship. An essential read for students and scholars of Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific security.

Forecast for Japan PDF Author: James William Morley
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400870399
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
If, as seems likely, Japan's 1975 GNP more than doubles the rest of Asia's, will it seek to build armed forces to match? For a reliable forecast, six policy specialists consider areas bearing on the path Japan takes. Drawing from the contributors' projections, James Motley concludes with a primary forecast of the security policy Japan is likely to follow in the early 1970's. Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. British Intelligence and the Japanese Challenge in Asia, 1914–1941

British Intelligence and the Japanese Challenge in Asia, 1914–1941 PDF Author: A. Best
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 023028728X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
This is the first full-length study of the role played by British Intelligence in influencing policy towards Japan from the decline of the Alliance to the outbreak of the Pacific War. Using many previously classified records it describes how the image of Japan generated by Intelligence during this period led Britain to underestimate Japanese military capabilities in 1941. The book shows how this image was derived from a lack of adequate intelligence resources and racially driven assumptions about Japanese national characteristics.

Asian Sound Cultures

Asian Sound Cultures PDF Author: Iris Haukamp
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000686884
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
This book examines the meanings, uses, and agency of voice, noise, sound, and sound technologies across Asia. Including a series of wide-ranging and interdisciplinary case studies, the book reveals sound as central to the experience of modernity in Asia and as essential to the understanding of the historical processes of cultural, social, political, and economic transformation throughout the long twentieth century. Presenting a broad range of topics – from the changing sounds of the Kyoto kimono making industry to radio in late colonial India – the book explores how the study of Asian sound cultures offers greater insight into historical accounts of local and global transformation. Challenging us to rethink and reassemble important categories in sound studies, this book will be a vital resource for students and scholars of sound studies, Asian studies, history, postcolonial studies, and media studies.
