Beyond Structural Adjustment in Africa

Beyond Structural Adjustment in Africa PDF Author: Julius E. Nyang'oro
Publisher: Praeger
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
This book brings into sharp focus the problems of development under conditions of structural adjustment and their relation to democratic change in Africa. Contributors to this volume are interested in specific countries such as Kenya, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, etc., but do bring to bear a rigorous comparative method which uses a political economy approach to the study of democracy, gender, industrialization, agriculture and the state. Its comparative approach in revisionist political economy allows for issues such as the new international division of labor to become central to the analysis of the relationship between developed and underdeveloped countries. The state-centric approach, although useful, may have missed important undercurrents in civil society. An analysis of development through the state's lenses has predominated the study of Africa. The approach by contributors in this volume is equally interested in the state but is also concerned with non-state actors. This dynamic approach characterizes few texts on Africa. This work should attract those who are concerned with African development, specifically, and international political economy in general.

Structural Adjustment and Socio-economic Change in Sub-Saharan Africa

Structural Adjustment and Socio-economic Change in Sub-Saharan Africa PDF Author: Peter Gibbon
Publisher: Nordic Africa Institute
ISBN: 9789171063977
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 108

Book Description
This report summarises the results of work at the Nordiska Afrikainstitutet/Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) on the impact of structural adjustment implementation on the economies, states and societies of sub-Saharan Africa. It consists of two essays and an appendix listing research projects which have been/are being carried out under the auspices of NAI. The first essay raises a series of conceptual and methodological questions in the context of a presentation of some of the main empirical results obtained from extended field work carried out during the course of 1992 and 1993 in Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The second essay presents the three main themes - private trading networks and structures, the changing political economy of land, and popular forms of social provisioning - that constitute the core of the second phase of NAI's structural adjustment research and, in so doing, provides a review of aspects of the adjustment literature. This report is, therefore, an attempt both at stock-taking and agenda-building as part of a wider quest for deepening our understanding of the structures and processes of socio-economic change associated with the crisis and adjustment years in contemporary Africa

Beyond Structural Adjustment

Beyond Structural Adjustment PDF Author: Nicolas Van de Walle
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1403981280
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
As the World Bank famously put it back in 1989, 'underlying the litany of Africa's development problems is a crisis of governance.' This is a collection of authoritative essays bringing together prominent Africanists in political science and public administration to look at the role of governance in African development. The goal of the book is to move beyond the status quo debates about 'structural adjustment' and to look at all the public and civic institutions which are likely to play a critical role if Africa is to overcome its economic crisis.

Structural Adjustment, Reconstruction and Development in Africa

Structural Adjustment, Reconstruction and Development in Africa PDF Author: Kempe Ronald Hope
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429686757
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
First published in 1997, this volume is intended to make a contribution to both the literature and the contentious debate on the relationship between structural adjustment and reconstruction and development in Africa, as seen from the multidisciplinary perspective of academics and practitioners working in Africa on African development problems and issues. The implementation of structural adjustment in Africa has spawned a considerable, and still on-going, debate with vociferous advocates on both sides of the issue, particularly with respect to the efficacy of structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) as an antidote to Africa’s development crisis. This book contributes to that debate with a rich mixture of analytical views and ideas covering a wide range of countries and sectors on the role and impact of structural adjustment programmes on the process of reconstruction and development in Africa.

Beyond Economic Liberalization in Africa

Beyond Economic Liberalization in Africa PDF Author: Kidane Mengisteab
Publisher: Zed Books
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
Have structural adjustment programmes in Africa largely failed? Ought the World Bank and the IMF to be paying more attention to the particular circumstances of individual countries and to the alternative policies being proposed by the Africans? The contributors to this volume assert both positions. Case studies of education, health, public services and import-export performance demonstrate the frequent lack of success of structural adjustment. These are followed by alternative approaches to overcoming Africa's economic and human crises, including the importance of democracy in securing responsiveness of state policy to public needs, the structural advantages of regional integration, sustainable development strategies that build on the continent's resource base, and a new partnership between state and market.
