The Carbon Code

The Carbon Code PDF Author: Brett Favaro
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 1421422549
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
How citizens can make realistic, climate-friendly lifestyle changes in a carbon-based economy: “Readable, passionate, and rational.” ?Quarterly Review of Biology Our world is getting hotter, and it’s our fault—our addiction to fossil fuels is destroying our fragile ecosystems and increasingly wreaking havoc. How can we respond to climate change deniers who mock the fact that environmental activists use fossil fuels? In short, how can an average citizen live a normal, functional life in a carbon-based economy without being justifiably called a hypocrite? In The Carbon Code, conservation biologist Brett Favaro answers these thorny questions, offering simple strategies to help you reduce your carbon footprint—without abandoning common sense. The Carbon Code is based on the four Rs: Reduce, Replace, Refine, and Rehabilitate. After outlining the scientific basics of climate change and explaining the logic of the code he prescribes, the author describes carbon-friendly technologies and behaviors we can adopt in our daily lives. However, he acknowledges that individual action, while vital, is insufficient. To achieve global sustainability, he insists we must make the fight against climate change go viral through conspicuous conservation. The Carbon Code is a tool of empowerment that shows you how to take ownership of your carbon footprint and adopt a lifestyle of conspicuous conservation that will spur governments and corporations to do the same. Saving the planet is, after all, about saving ourselves. The Carbon Code provides a framework to do this, and helps you become a hero in the fight against climate change. “Explains in refreshingly forthright terms how technological advances are making it easier and cheaper to be green.”?Financial Times

Forestry for a low-carbon future

Forestry for a low-carbon future PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251093121
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
Forests are critical to mitigation, having a dual role; they function globally as a carbon sink but are also responsible for about 10 to 12 percent of global emissions. Forests and forest products offer both developing and developing countries with a wide range of options for timely and cost-effective mitigation. Afforestation / reforestation offers the best option because of its short timescale and ease of implementation. Reducing deforestation, especially due to the possibility for immediate action. Yet forest contributions to mitigation. Wood products and wood energy can replace fossil-intense products in other sectors, creating a virtuous cycle towards low-carbon economies. The mitigation potential and costs of the various options differ greatly by activity, region, system boundaries and time horizon. Policymakers must decide on the optimal mix of options, adapted to local circumstances, for meeting national climate change and development goals. This publication assesses the options and highlights the enabling conditions, opportunities and potential bottlenecks. It will be supported by policymakers, investors and investors in their climate strategies. Enhancing Carbon Sequestration in Forests, Agricultural Lands and Wetlands in the Nordic Countries: Technical Measures and Policy Instruments

Enhancing Carbon Sequestration in Forests, Agricultural Lands and Wetlands in the Nordic Countries: Technical Measures and Policy Instruments PDF Author: Nainggolan, Doan
Publisher: Nordic Council of Ministers
ISBN: 9289371757
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 82

Book Description
Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2021-537/ The project reviews a range of relevant land-use measures, their climate mitigation effects and the associated policy instruments, with a focus on Denmark, Finland and Sweden. It identifies alternative policy instruments that can be introduced to further augment carbon sequestration in the LULUCF sector in the Nordic countries. Key findings of the project are 1) Several land-use measures relevant for climate mitigation exist (e.g. measures on organic soils, afforestation) although the implementations are rarely explicitly driven by climate goals; 2) Policy instruments are currently limited and less diverse in their forms; 3) Alternative policy instruments include performance based incentive mechanisms, carbon rent approach, and market based instruments. Follow-up research is needed to support, incentivize and augment climate mitigation in the LULUCF sector in the Nordic region.
