Book Description
Excerpt from The Westminster Confession of Faith Examined on the Basis of the Other Protestant Confessions The body of this work contains, besides the explanation and proof of the propositions prefixed to it, the explanation and proof at large of certain statements made in a treatise published by the author in 1866, under the title 'The Biblical and Patristic doctrine of Salvation.' The propositions prefixed to this work were first sketched in 1855, to be laid before the Session of St. Giles's Church, Edinburgh. The author deemed himself fully justified in resolving to take this step, by certain circumstances stated in detail in the first Appendix, which rendered it still more necessary for the vindication of Christian truth, than of his own rights as a Christian and citizen; though he deemed the latter to have been grossly outraged. The Westminster Confession of Faith

The Westminster Confession of Faith PDF Author: The Westminster Divines
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781532744501
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 56

Book Description
The Westminster Confession of Faith is the greatest of all the creeds of the Christian Church. Since its first publication in 1646 it has remained absolutely unsurpassed as an accurate and concise statement of Christian doctrine. Among all the shifting sands of theological opinion here is solid truth, for it has its foundation in the unchanging truth of Scripture--witness the copious references from the Bible which are printed on each page. Because of its faithfulness to Scripture the Confession has permanent worth and abiding relevance. The Church of Christ cannot be creedless and live. Especially in an age of doubt and confusion, it is her duty to define the Christian faith and to proclaim it to the world. Nowhere has the Reformed Church done this so effectively as in The Westminster Confession of Faith. While always recognising the supreme place of the Word of God in all matters of faith and practice, one can always turn to the Confession as one's subordinate standard. Here readers will find spiritual treasure; here too they will find comfort and strength. Also contained in this volume are the magnificent Larger and Shorter Catechisms, The Sum of Saving Knowledge, The National Covenant, The Solemn League and Covenant, The Directory for the Public Worship of God, The Form of Presbyterial Church Government, and The Directory for Family Worship.

A Question of Consensus

A Question of Consensus PDF Author: Jonathan Master
Publisher: Fortress Press
ISBN: 1451472358
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 223

Book Description
From the very earliest days after its completion in 1646, the Westminster Confession's position on assurance has been a subject of controversy. In this exciting new work, Jonathan Master considers the Westminster Confession's statements on assurance as a position of consensus among a diversity of viewpoints. Master traces how from this one position, the idea was expanded and modified—even by the document's own authors!—just years after its reception, in very distinct ways. Each of these expansions on what was intended to be a consensus document forms the basis for later traditions regarding assurance within the Reformed and Evangelical traditions. To date, few studies have examined these expansions as a united whole, and Master's work highlights the ways in which the streams of thought flowing out of Westminster are as important as those flowing into it, raising as they do questions about confession and doctrinal freedom in the growing Reformed tradition.
