Yes, But Not Quite

Yes, But Not Quite PDF Author: Dwayne A. Tunstall
Publisher: Fordham Univ Press
ISBN: 0823230562
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
This book contends that Josiah Royce bequeathed to philosophy a novel idealism based on an ethico-religious insight. This insight became the basis for an idealistic personalism, wherein the Real is the personal and a metaphysics of community is the most appropriate approach to metaphysics for personal beings, especially in an often impersonal and technological intellectual climate. The first part of the book traces how Royce constructed his idealistic personalism in response to criticisms made by George Holmes Howison. That personalism is interpreted as an ethical and panentheistic one, somewhat akin to Charles Hartshorne's process philosophy. The second part investigates Royce's idealistic metaphysics in general and his ethico-religious insight in particular. In the course of these investigations, the author examines how Royce's ethico-religious insight could be strengthened by incorporating the philosophical theology of Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and Emmanuel Levinas's ethical metaphysics. The author concludes by briefly exploring the possibility that Royce's progressive racial anti-essentialism is, in fact, a form of cultural, antiblack racism and asks whether his cultural, antiblack racism taints his ethico-religious insight.

Death, Society, and Human Experience PDF Author: Robert Kastenbaum
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1003859852
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 635

Book Description
The 13th edition of Death, Society, and Human Experience provides a panoramic overview of the ways that we are touched by death and dying, both as individuals and as members of society. A landmark text in the field, the authors draw on contributions from the social and behavioral sciences as well as the humanities, including perspectives offered through history, philosophy, religion, literature, and the arts, to provide thorough coverage and understanding of topics associated with the end of life and death and dying. By approaching the subject from multiple angles, the authors explain the various ways that individual, cultural, and societal attitudes influence both how and when we die and how we live and deal with the knowledge of death and loss. Originally written by Robert Kastenbaum, a renowned scholar who developed one of the world’s first death education courses, Christopher M. Moreman, who has worked in the field of death studies for two decades, has updated this edition. In addition to infusing his close areas of focus, both in afterlife beliefs and experiences and how these might affect how people live their lives, he’s weaved in new coverage of current affairs, including: The impact of COVID-19 on experiences of death, bereavement, mourning, and more Expanded legalization of physician-assisted dying in the United States and several countries Changes in bereavement rituals and traditions stemming from technology use and social media With additional content and classroom extensions available online, Death, Society, and Human Experience remains a thoughtful, exploratory, and impressively comprehensive overview for undergraduate and graduate courses in death, dying, and bereavement.

Stains on My Name, War in My Veins

Stains on My Name, War in My Veins PDF Author: Brackette F. Williams
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 0822381664
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 346

Book Description
Burdened with a heritage of both Spanish and British colonization and imperialism, Guyana is today caught between its colonial past, its efforts to achieve the consciousness of nationhood, and the need of its diverse subgroups to maintain their own identity. Stains on My Name, War in My Veins chronicles the complex struggles of the citizens of Guyana to form a unified national culture against the pulls of ethnic, religious, and class identities. Drawing on oral histories and a close study of daily life in rural Guyana, Brackette E. Williams examines how and why individuals and groups in their quest for recognition as a “nation” reproduce ethnic chauvinism, racial stereotyping, and religious bigotry. By placing her ethnographic study in a broader historical context, the author develops a theoretical understanding of the relations among various dimensions of personal identity in the process of nation building.

For the living, the dead, and the people stuck somewhere in between, Heron Creek has become a battleground. Amelia teeters on the edge of a deep depression that could cost her her child. Beau, her boyfriend who might not quite be her boyfriend anymore, is breaking her heart. None of that will matter if Gracie can’t figure out how to break the hundreds year old curse on the male line of her family. She knows she needs to focus on that, but with the future of one of South Carolina’s oldest and most prestigious families hanging in the balance, she’s tempted to try to save them, too. What Gracie’s about to learn is that she can’t do this alone, and every single person who has entered her life since her return to Heron Creek will need to pitch in for her to succeed. Well, that and the fact that she might not be able to save everyone…not even herself.
