Decolonization in South Asia

Decolonization in South Asia PDF Author: Sekhar Bandyopadhyay
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113401824X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
This book explores the meanings and complexities of India’s experience of transition from colonial to the post-colonial period. It focuses on the first five years – from independence on 15th August 1947 to the first general election in January 1952 – in the politics of West Bengal, the new Indian province that was created as a result of the Partition. The author, a specialist on the history of modern India, discusses what freedom actually meant to various individuals, communities and political parties, how they responded to it, how they extended its meaning and how in their anxiety to confront the realities of free India, they began to invent new enemies of their newly acquired freedom. By emphasising the representations of popular mentality rather than the institutional changes brought in by the process of decolonization, he draws attention to other concerns and anxieties that were related to the problems of coming to terms with the newly achieved freedom and the responsibility of devising independent rules of governance that would suit the historic needs of a pluralist nation. Decolonization in South Asia analyses the transitional politics of West Bengal in light of recent developments in postcolonial theory on nationalism, treating the ‘nation’ as a space for contestation, rather than a natural breeding ground for homogeneity in the complex political scenario of post-independence India. It will appeal to academics interested in political science, sociology, social anthropology and cultural and Asian studies.

Publisher: K.K. Publications
ISBN:
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
This book discusses the phenomenon of the emergence of the Gouda community in Andhra Pradesh Politics from a historical perspective from 1956 to 2009. This work is very rare since no work has been done on the particular Cates's socio-political upliftment in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State. The historical evidence of the origin and emergence of the Gouda community and the struggles carry forwarded by the leaders of this community. These dimensions are discussed in six chapters of this book. The theoretical and practical concepts and contextualization of the Gouda community's struggles in the entire Andhra Parades State were discussed with a historical perspective and the parochial vicissitudes of the movements of the gouda community were discussed elaborately and intricately. This work is confined to the socio, cultural, economical and political emancipation of the gouda community and its rise to prominence in Andhra Pradesh state from the post-independent period to 2009. The period of the study is significant because it deals with the changing conditions of the Gouda community over a period of a half-century. Since the year 1956 has observed historical socio, political changes in the form of formation of the Andhra Pradesh state, the study begins with that year and Telangana statehood movement taken a historical turn in 2009 with the formation of political JAC and all caste groups formed as the JACs and worked with Telangana movement hence the study ends in 2009. In the part of mainstream historical studies, the contributions of Gouda community leaders and the growth and various stages of the Gouda caste movements have not been accounted for well. Therefore, this work hopefully fulfills the dearth of historical study on this community.

The 1947 Partition in The East PDF Author: Subhasri Ghosh
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 100046282X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 245

Book Description
This book explores the experiences of people affected by the Partition of British India and princely states in 1947 through first-person accounts, memoirs, archival material, literature, and cinema. It focuses on the displacement, violence and trauma of the people affected and interrogates the interrelationships between nationalism, temporality, religion, and citizenship. The authors examine the mass migrations triggered by the 1947 Partition, amidst nationalist posturing, religious violence, and debates on crucial issues of refugee rehabilitation and redistribution of land and resources. It focuses on the drawing of the borders and the ruptures in the socio-cultural bonds within regions and communities brought on by demographic changes, violence, and displacement. The volume reflects on the significant mark left by the event on the socio-political sensibilities of various communities, and the questions of identity and citizenship. It also studies the effects of Partition on the politics of Bangladesh and India’s east and northeast states, specifically Bengal, Assam and Tripura. A significant addition to the existing corpus on Partition historiography, this book will be of interest to modern Indian history, partition studies, border studies, sociology, refugee and migration studies, cultural studies, literature, post-colonial studies and South Asian studies, particularly those concerned with Bengal, Northeast India and Bangladesh.

1947-1957, India: the Birth of a Republic

1947-1957, India: the Birth of a Republic PDF Author: Chandrachur Ghose
Publisher: Penguin Random House India Private Limited
ISBN: 9357082557
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
The story of a decade-1947 to 1957-that made and unmade India The first decade after India's independence, 1947-1957, was probably the most crucial in the nation's history. Opening a window to this period, this book weaves a story out of the complex ideas and events that have largely remained beneath the surface of public discourse. The transfer of power, the framing of the Constitution and the formation of the governance machinery; the clash of ideas and ideologies among parties and personalities; the beginning of the disintegration of the Congress and the consolidation of political forces in the opposition; Nehru's grappling with existential problems at home and his quest for global peace; the interplay between democratic ideals and ruthless power play-all these factors impinged on each other and shaped the new republic in its formative decade. Thought-provoking, argumentative and unputdownable, 1947-1957, India: The Birth of a Republic is a must-read for anyone interested in Indian political history.
