Each night, he returns exhausted to his dilapidated house to comfort his starving wife and daughter. If only his love could fill the chasm in their stomachs created by his failings. But even in a place like the Black Hole, there are opportunities for those stupid or desperate enough to take them. Drug trials, loan sharks, and gangs all offer the possibility of extra credits. With Bart’s inability to provide sending him and his family on a downward trajectory, maybe he’s both stupid and desperate enough to try something different. And someone has to win in this hellish place, so why not him? Eight Ways to Kill a Rat: Neon Horizon book six is a fast-paced cyberpunk thriller. True Crime Parallels to the Mysteries of Agatha Christie

Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476637687
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
Outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare, the works of Agatha Christie stand as some of the most celebrated crime fiction of our era. This book takes ten of her most famous works and shows their relationship to ten of crime history's most famous and sensational cases--cases whose notoriety still resounds to this day. Addressing both novels and short stories, the author illuminates the relationship between Christie's Murder on the Orient Express and the sensational Lindbergh Kidnapping Case of 1932; the connections between Christie's Mrs. McGinty's Dead and the horrific true case of England's most loathed wife-killer, the American Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen--and eight more engrossing pairings of Christie's ingenious mystery puzzles with vintage true crime's most sensational events.

Credit and Debt in Eighteenth-Century England

Credit and Debt in Eighteenth-Century England PDF Author: Alexander Wakelam
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429647921
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 261

Book Description
Throughout the eighteenth century hundreds of thousands of men and women were cast into prison for failing to pay their debts. This apparently illogical system where debtors were kept away from their places of work remained popular with creditors into the nineteenth century even as Britain witnessed industrialisation, market growth, and the increasing sophistication of commerce, as the debtors’ prisons proved surprisingly effective. Due to insufficient early modern currency, almost every exchange was reliant upon the use of credit based upon personal reputation rather than defined collateral, making the lives of traders inherently precarious as they struggled to extract payments based on little more than promises. This book shows how traders turned to debtors’ prisons to give those promises defined consequences, the system functioning as a tool of coercive contract enforcement rather than oppression of the poor. Credit and Debt demonstrates for the first time the fundamental contribution of debt imprisonment to the early modern economy and reveals how traders made use of existing institutions to alleviate the instabilities of commerce in the context of unprecedented market growth. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in economic history and early modern British history.
