Book Description
Excerpt from The Decline and Revival of Public Interest in College Education: An Address Delivered Before the Graduates of Oberlin College, June 20th, 1893 1. There has been such a decline, recently followed by a revival. This is shown by statistics. 2. The decline and revival are incidental to the larger tendency toward centralization. II. What is being done, and what can be done, to check the decline? What has caused the revival? How can the general public and the masses be inspired with fresh confidence in the colleges? 1. By fuller instruction in the history and causes of the present popular and public movements, and of popular and public movements in general. That is, by instruction in social science. Sociology embraces the needed studies. 2. By teaching the useful arts. 3. By university extension work and the university settlement. III. These branches and forms of work are valuable, not merely for their influence upon public interest. They are necessary parts of the best education, and necessary to the preservation of our institutions. The philanthropic purpose in which the colleges were founded is best sub-served to-day by such instruction and work. Decline and Revival in Higher Education

Decline and Revival in Higher Education PDF Author: Herbert I. London
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351523260
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
This is an analysis of higher education in the past half century, a period of dramatic change and democratization. But it is more than that. The author has been a participant in the struggle to stem the decline in higher education, as it moved from an emphasis on classical liberal values toward relativism and ideological extremism. This volume reflects an awareness of what has been lost, but sees hope for a revival of traditional values as technological change and awareness of failure forces institutions to examine their premise. Herbert I. London has provided here fuel for fundamental redirection in American college and university affairs. Decline and Revival in Higher Education is uncompromising in its concerns, but points the way toward a future linked to the best of the past. The work follows the personal evolution of the author, while at the same time, describes the devolution of university standards in such institutions as Columbia, Duke, the University of California at Berkeley, and New York University. While seeing optimistic trends in oases of traditional programming that can serve as a counterweight to campus orthodoxies, London argues that the dramatic transformation of the academy cannot be denied. The social sciences and humanities in particular have become isolated from mainstream requirements in the nation. London deals with concrete concerns, such as the collapse of classic book programs in the contemporary curriculum, the decline and even vigilante raids on opposition in campus publications, the collapse of moral judgment in favor of pure relativism, the transformation of many museums into a storage houses of debris, and the confusion of coarse language with democratization. These developments lead the author to write this book, for if the culture wars are over, the American people may be the losers.

The Emergence of the American University

The Emergence of the American University PDF Author: Laurence R. Veysey
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226854566
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 519

Book Description
The American university of today is the product of a sudden, mainly unplanned period of development at the close of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. At that time the university, and with it a recognizably modern style of academic life, emerged to eclipse the older, religiously oriented college. Precedents, formal and informal, were then set which have affected the soul of professor, student, and academic administrator ever since. What did the men living in this formative period want the American university to become? How did they differ in defining the ideal university? And why did the institution acquire a form that only partially corresponded with these definitions? These are the questions Mr. Veysey seeks to answer.
