Book Description

This book explores how conceptions of episcopacy (government of a church by bishops) shaped the identity of the bishops of France in the wake of the reforming Council of Trent (1545–63). It demonstrates how the episcopate, initially demoralised by the Wars of Religion, developed a powerful ideology of privilege, leadership and pastorate that enabled it to become a flourishing participant in the religious, political and social life of the ancien regime. The book analyses the attitudes of Tridentine bishops towards their office by considering the French episcopate as a recognisable caste, possessing a variety of theological and political principles that allowed it to dominate the French church.

Book Description
The better we understand Jesus, the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher whom many called the Messiah? In Priest, Prophet, King, you'll discover Jesus as the Anointed One - the ultimate priest, prophet, and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Father Barron affirms that we see Jesus most clearly through the lens of the Old Testament. This deeply biblical program presents the Old Testament foreshadowing of each of Jesus' three offices as priest, prophet and king and then describes how Jesus is the fulfillment of each as seen in the New Testament. The Study Guide includes commentary, Questions for Understanding, and Questions for Application. Through this presentation of Priest, Prophet, King, you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission.

The Book of Pastoral Rule

The Book of Pastoral Rule PDF Author: Saint Gregory the Great
Publisher: Aeterna Press
ISBN:
Category : Religion

Book Description
With kind and humble intent thou reprovest me, dearest brother, for having wished by hiding myself to fly from the burdens of pastoral care; as to which, lest to some they should appear light, I express with my pen in the book before you all my own estimate of their heaviness, in order both that he who is free from them may not unwarily seek them, and that he who has so sought them may tremble for having got them. This book is divided into four separate heads of argument, that it may approach the reader’s mind by allegations arranged in order—by certain steps, as it were. For, as the necessity of things requires, we must especially consider after what manner every one should come to supreme rule; and, duly arriving at it, after what manner he should live; and, living well, after what manner he should teach; and, teaching aright, with how great consideration every day he should become aware of his own infirmity; lest either humility fly from the approach, or life be at variance with the arrival, or teaching be wanting to the life, or presumption unduly exalt the teaching.

Running Away

Running Away PDF Author: Ulysses Stephen King, Jr.
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1490871500
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
“Ulysses’ honest candor about the Christian journey is refreshing! He supports the body of Christ in developing spiritual veracity while applying practical truths. Running Away is an authentic discourse exploring life behind the pulpit.” —Vita Jones, Ph.D For those sons and daughters who served alongside their parents in ministry and were left on the battlefield wounded with scars, you are not forgotten. There is healing for the soul and spirit, even in the midst of pain and disappointment. Pastor King’s daring memoir goes beyond the religious slogans and Christian jargon that is so often used by popular celebrity-preachers, and he examines some of the views and stereotypes cast on pastors’ children who serve in the church. He shares his personal journey, emotions, and reasons for accepting the call to serve as the pastor of a historic classical Pentecostal church. He also attempts to answer the question, “Why do so many pastors’ children leave the church and run away from the call to serve?” Running Away is a memoir of passion told by the son of a bishop who struggled to find his purpose and destiny in a denomination he no longer loved after the death of his father. The book looks at Pastor King’s personal tests, failures, and trials in ministry, and what it took for him to overcome some of the painful experiences of leadership. Running Away is not a memoir of triumph or failure, but of truth—his truth. Pastor King takes a leap of faith and risk by being vulnerable in order to share his story with a broader and wider community, hoping his readers will understand his heart and love for his father, and the local church he faithfully served for over thirty years. Running Away is a must-read for pastors with children and Christians who are often critical of them.
