For Joshua

For Joshua PDF Author: Richard Wagamese
Publisher: Milkweed+ORM
ISBN: 1571317333
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
“An expansive work about healing, resilience, humanity, respect, inheritance, Indigenous teachings, and most of all, love” from the author of Indian Horse (Literary Hub). “We may not relight the fires that used to burn in our villages, but we can carry the embers from those fires in our hearts and learn to light new fires in a new world.” Ojibwe tradition calls for fathers to walk their children through the world, sharing the ancient understanding “that we are all, animate and inanimate alike, living on the one pure breath with which the Creator gave life to the Universe.” In this intimate series of letters to the six-year-old son from whom he was estranged, Richard Wagamese fulfills this traditional duty with grace and humility, describing his own path through life—separation from his family as a boy, substance abuse, incarceration, and ultimately the discovery of books and writing—and braiding this extraordinary story with the teachings of his people, in which animals were the teachers of human beings, until greed and a desire to control the more-than-human world led to anger, fear, and, eventually, profound alienation. At once a deeply moving memoir and a fascinating elucidation of a rich indigenous cosmology, For Joshua is an unforgettable journey. “Told lyrically and unflinchingly, For Joshua is both a letter of apology and another attempt at self-identification for the writer. A must-read for Wagamese fans, and a good primer for his novels.” —Minneapolis StarTribune “A well-written, introspective book on fatherhood and loss that will especially interest readers and students of First Nations life and literature.” —Library Journal

Divine Presence amid Violence

Divine Presence amid Violence PDF Author: Walter Brueggemann
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 160608089X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 93

Book Description
To pursue the matter of revelation in context, I will address an exceedingly difficult text in the Old Testament, Joshua 11. The reason for taking up this text is to deal with the often asked and troublesome question: What shall we do with all the violence and bloody war that is done in the Old Testament in the name of Yahweh? The question reflects a sense that these texts of violence are at least an embarrassment, are morally repulsive, and are theologically problematic in the Bible, not because they are violent, but because this is violence either in the name of or at the hand of Yahweh. -from chapter 2

The Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Joshua

The Anglo-Norman Bible's Book of Joshua PDF Author: Brent A. Pitts
Publisher:
ISBN: 9782503591339
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
The Anglo-Norman Bible's Joshua includes tales of spies, giants, the prostitute Rahab, the punishment of Achan, oracles, and Joshua's brilliant military victories. Joshua stops the sun. The first half of the book relates Joshua's stunning conquests in Canaan. The second half, the apportionment of the land among the tribes, detailed geographical surveys of territorial boundaries, and the death of Joshua. Skilful, well-paced story telling is a feature of the ANB's Joshua. To the accounts of Rahab and Achan we may add the chronicle of Joshua's successful, crushing campaign in the wake of the destruction of Makkedah. In rapid succession, and in an annalistic style involving staccato repetition of key phrases, the narrator relates the destruction of Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir. The text of the ANB's Joshua is extant in British Library Royal 1 C III (base manuscript, L) and Paris, Bibliotheque nationale de France, MS francais 1 (P), both c. 1350 and both the Bibles of kings. L belonged at some point in the fifteenth century to Reading's Benedictine abbey, entering the royal library in 1530. Characteristic of L is its occasional insertion of short glosses in English or Latin to clarify or correct the Anglo-Norman text. An illustrated text, P was prepared by an English workshop for the fourth baron de Welles, John, and his wife, Maud, daughter of William, Lord Ros. This is clearly the Bible of a wealthy and well-connected English family. After the Welles family, the manuscript belonged to Louis de Bruges (1492), then to King Louis XII of France.

The Book of Joshua

The Book of Joshua PDF Author: Zachary Schomburg
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781939568069
Category : Local author
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Poetry. Zachary schomburg has delivered his latest work from a dark place, where little machines repeat in a hollow voice, "this is only further proof of your badness." presented in a single narrative, THE BOOK OF JOSHUA is a sorry heart begged out of dreams, death & a horse's eye. It is an epic journey not only affirming that "there is a difference between sadness and suffering," but that Schomburg is one of the most unusual poets writing today, pushing his work beyond our familiarity. These poems have a thirst for blood, but they don't yet know exactly what to do with their hands. THE BOOK OF JOSHUA calls out in hunger and loneliness, "I didn't feel like living in anything not shaped like me anymore."
