Pages : 576

Book Description
Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scienti?c disciplines and a resurgence of interest in the modern as well as the cl- sical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series: Texts in Applied Mathematics (TAM). Thedevelopmentofnewcoursesisanaturalconsequenceofahighlevelof excitement on the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and symbolic computer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos, mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose of this textbook series is to meet the current and future needs of these advances and to encourage the teaching of new courses. TAM will publish textbooks suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and will complement the Applied Ma- ematical Sciences (AMS) series, which will focus on advanced textbooks and research-level monographs.

Functional Analysis and Approximation

Functional Analysis and Approximation PDF Author: P.L. Butzer
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 3034893698
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 461

Book Description
These Proceedings form a record of the lectures presented at the interna tional Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation held at the Ober wolfach Mathematical Research Institute, August 9-16, 1980. They include 33 of the 38 invited conference papers, as well as three papers subsequently submitted in writing. Further, there is a report devoted to new and unsolved problems, based on two special sessions of the conference. The present volume is the sixth Oberwolfach Conference in Birkhauser's ISNM series to be edited at Aachen *. It is once again devoted to more significant results obtained in the wide areas of approximation theory, harmonic analysis, functional analysis, and operator theory during the past three years. Many of the papers solicited not only outline fundamental advances in their fields but also focus on interconnections between the various research areas. The papers in the present volume have been grouped into nine chapters. Chapter I, on operator theory, deals with maps on positive semidefinite opera tors, spectral bounds of semigroup operators, evolution equations of diffusion type, the spectral theory of propagators, and generalized inverses. Chapter II, on functional analysis, contains papers on modular approximation, interpolation spaces, and unconditional bases.

Functional Analysis and Numerical Mathematics

Functional Analysis and Numerical Mathematics PDF Author: Lothar Collatz
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483264009
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 494

Book Description
Functional Analysis and Numerical Mathematics focuses on the structural changes which numerical analysis has undergone, including iterative methods, vectors, integral equations, matrices, and boundary value problems. The publication first examines the foundations of functional analysis and applications, including various types of spaces, convergence and completeness, operators in Hilbert spaces, vector and matrix norms, eigenvalue problems, and operators in pseudometric and other special spaces. The text then elaborates on iterative methods. Topics include the fixed-point theorem for a general iterative method in pseudometric spaces; special cases of the fixed-point theorem and change of operator; iterative methods for differential and integral equations; and systems of equations and difference methods. The manuscript takes a look at monotonicity, inequalities, and other topics, including monotone operators, applications of Schauder's theorem, matrices and boundary value problems of monotone kind, discrete Chebyshev approximation and exchange methods, and approximation of functions. The publication is a valuable source of data for mathematicians and researchers interested in functional analysis and numerical mathematics.

Theoretical Numerical Analysis

Theoretical Numerical Analysis PDF Author: Peter Linz
Publisher: Courier Dover Publications
ISBN: 0486833615
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
This concise text introduces numerical analysis as a practical, problem-solving discipline. The three-part presentation begins with the fundamentals of functional analysis and approximation theory. Part II outlines the major results of theoretical numerical analysis, reviewing product integration, approximate expansion methods, the minimization of functions, and related topics. Part III considers specific subjects that illustrate the power and usefulness of theoretical analysis. Ideal as a text for a one-year graduate course, the book also offers engineers and scientists experienced in numerical computing a simple introduction to the major ideas of modern numerical analysis. Some practical experience with computational mathematics and the ability to relate this experience to new concepts is assumed. Otherwise, no background beyond advanced calculus is presupposed. Moreover, the ideas of functional analysis used throughout the text are introduced and developed only to the extent they are needed.
