Der einem deutschen lutherischen Umfeld entstammende Kaufmannssohn Martin Gruneweg aus Danzig unternahm als Schreiber mit armenischen Kaufherren in Lemberg in der zweiten Halfte des 16. Jahrhunderts umfangreiche Handelsreisen, wobei er lebendige Aufzeichnungen uber die Regionen Mittel-, Ost-, Sudost- und Sudeuropas hinterliess. 1588 trat er in den Dominikanerorden ein und begab sich damit in ein polnisches katholisches Umfeld. Gruneweg hielt sich fur langere Zeit in den wichtigsten wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Zentren seiner Zeit auf. So wusste er nicht nur vom Hof in Warschau, dem Handelsmechanismus in Danzig oder dem Zusammenleben verschiedener Ethnien in Lemberg Interessantes zu berichten. Seine Aufzeichnungen sind eine unerschopfl iche Fundgrube zur Religions- und Kirchengeschichte. Diese stehen beispielhaft fur die Geisteswelt eines nicht studierten Klosterbruders aus dem Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts. Mit der vom DHI Warschau inzwischen vorgelegten Edition der Aufzeichnungen Grunewegs* sind weitreichende Forschungsmoglichkeiten eroffnet worden. Der Band vereinigt die Beitrage einer zum Erscheinen der Edition 2008 organisierten internationalen Konferenz, welche die Fulle der Moglichkeiten einer Auswertung aufzeigen.

This volume analyzes historical processes of mobility by focusing on material objects. Mobility—as a shorthand for various related processes such as migration, transfer, entanglement, and translation—involves human actors, immaterial elements such as ideas and knowledge, but also objects in various forms and functions. For example, as material infrastructures they are the basis for transport and travel; as goods they are the object and purpose of trade or gift exchange. The Uses of Justice in Global Perspective, 1600–1900 presents a new perspective on the uses of justice between 1600 and 1900 and confronts prevailing Eurocentric historiography in its examination of how people of this period made use of the law. Between 1600 and 1900 the towns in Western Europe, the Kingdoms in Eastern Europe, the Empires in Asia and the Colonial States in Asia and the Americas were all characterised by a plurality of legal orders resulting from interactions and negotiations between states, institutions, and people with different backgrounds. Eschatology played a central role in both politics and society throughout the early modern period. It inspired people to strive for social and political change, including sometimes by violent means, and prompted in return strong reactions against their religious activism. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, numerous apocalyptical and messianic movements came to the fore across Eurasia and North Africa, raising questions about possible interconnections. Why were eschatological movements so pervasive in early modern times? This volume provides some answers to this question by exploring the interconnected histories of confessions and religions from Moscow to Cusco. Between the later middle ages and the eighteenth century, religious orders were in the vanguard of reform movements within the Christian church. Recent scholarship on medieval Europe has emphasised how mendicants exercised a significant influence on the religiosity of the laity by actually shaping their spirituality and piety. In a similar way for the early modern period, religious orders have been credited with disseminating Tridentine reform, training new clergy, gaining new converts and bringing those who had strayed back into the fold. Much about this process, however, still remains unknown, particularly with regards to east central Europe. Exploring the complex relationship between western monasticism and lay society in east central Europe across a broad chronological timeframe, this collection provides a re-examination of the level and nature of interaction between members of religious orders and the communities around them. That the studies in this collection are all located in east central Europe - Transylvania, Hungary, Austria, and Bohemia- fulfils a second key aim of the volume: the examination of clerical and lay piety in a region of Europe almost entirely ignored by western scholarship. As such the volume provides an important addition to current scholarship, showcasing fresh research on a subject and region on which little has been published in English. The volume further contributes to the reintegration of eastern and western European history, expanding the existing parameters of scholarly discourse into late medieval and early modern religious practice and piety.

English summary: This collection examines how the idea of religious-confessional identities on the one hand and the development of mobility on the other influenced each other in modern Europe. German description: Das fruhneuzeitliche Europa ist gekennzeichnet durch eine enorme Zunahme von Mobilitat, bedingt durch bessere Verkehrswege und technische Neuerungen seit dem Ausgang des Mittelalters. Religion konnte sich einerseits hemmend auf solche Mobilitatsprozesse auswirken. Andererseits konnten religiose Beweggrunde raumbezogene Mobilitat aber auch befordern, ja zum Teil uberhaupt erst bewirken. So loste die konfessionelle Spaltung der lateinischen Christenheit und die nachfolgende Konfessionalisierung in den Territorien Migrationsprozesse bisher ungekannter Grosse aus, bis hin zur Auswanderung ganzer Glaubensgemeinschaften nach Ubersee. Aber auch wirtschaftliche Zwange, Kriege und Hungersnote, die Ausubung von Handel und bestimmten Gewerben oder die akademische Ausbildung sowie die adelige Standeserziehung konnten Menschen gleich welchen religiosen Bekenntnisses dazu veranlassen, dauerhaft oder zeitweilig ihren Aufenthaltsort zu wechseln. Beide Phanomene, Religion und Mobilitat, sind von der historischen Forschung bislang zumeist getrennt voneinander behandelt worden. Die Konfessionalisierungsforschung hat Religion bislang als Impulsgeber fur Mobilitat wahrgenommen und dabei den Zusammenhang mit anderen Formen von Mobilitat zum Teil vernachlassigt. Die Beitrage des Bandes tragen dazu bei, religions- und migrationsgeschichtliche Ansatze und Fragestellungen zusammenzufuhren und enger miteinander zu verzahnen.
