Excerpt from Shakespeare's Use of Song: With the d104 of the Principal Songs The special study, which forms the burden of these pages, was first undertaken as far back as 1908 - the direct cause was the late Mr. Lewis Waller's transfer of The Owl Song from Love's Labour's Lost to As You Like It. Unfortunately many events conspired to hinder the prosecution of the work - one became involved in military duties in the War, and since then, in common with other peace-loving residents (of whom there are a few, appearances notwithstanding) in Ireland, one has been exposed to many inconveniences. Nothing has been more heartening than the encouragement received from Mr. William Poel, and his kindly advice, to which particular value attaches by reason of his long experience as a producer of Shakespeare's plays, was always beneficial and practical. Mr. W. J. Lawrence, Mr. Percy Simpson, and Dr. E. H. Fellowes were good enough to read over my papers, and I have great pleasure in acknowledging the benefit I have received from their many helpful suggestions.
