Book Description
Academic Paper from the year 2013 in the subject Literature - Modern Literature, Masaryk University , language: English, abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse the character of Jocelyn Pierston as a tragic hero. The paper focuses on two novels - "The Pursuit of the Well-Beloved" and "The Well- Beloved" - and is divided into two main chapters, while the latter novel is preferred. The first half of the work is dedicated to the Aristotelian concept of the tragic hero, its usage and the conditions for a protagonist to be labeled as such. In addition, some of Thomas Hardy’s opinions on humanity, fate and nature will be shown and discussed with several sources, as well as his attitude towards tragic heroes. In the second half the main protagonist is thoroughly examined in both novels in order to find his tragic flaw and understand his character.By the analysis of various tragic effects depicted in the source texts the thesis tries to argue whether Pierston fulfills those conditions and is a tragic hero or whether he simply lacks the needed qualities.

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 12, University of Marburg, course: The Pre-Modern Novel: Hardy and Conrad, language: English, abstract: Two completely different women, Susanna Bridehead and Arabella Donn, share the same man in Thomas Hardy ́s Jude the Obscure. Jude ́s cousin Sue is a “pretty, liquid-eyed, light-footed young woman” . Her mind, her education, her unconventional beliefs and especially her insistence on these beliefs impress Jude. His affection to Arabella Donn is quite different. She whom he addressed was a fine dark-eyed girl, not exactly handsome, but capable of passing as such at a little distance, despite some coarseness of skin and fibre. She had a round and prominent bosom, full lips, perfect teeth, and the rich complexion of a Cochin hen's egg. She was a complete and substantial female animal -- no more, no less. Of course, Sue and Arabella are not just contrasting in their appearance but they have oppositional ideas, beliefs and attitudes towards life. Therefore, they lead their lives under different circumstances and get different social recognition. By this example, Hardy criticizes the rigidity of certain conventions in the Victorian Age. In the following I will analyse various aspects which demonstrate the differences between the two characters, namely the two women’s relation to Jude and their attitude towards sexuality, marriage, motherhood, religion and education.

Book Description
One of Hardy's most powerful novels, "The Mayor of Casterbridge" opens with a shocking and haunting scene: In a drunken rage, Michael Henchard sells his wife and daughter to a visiting sailor at a local fair. When they return to Casterbridge some nineteen years later, Henchard--having gained power and success as the mayor--finds he cannot erase the past or the guilt that consumes him. "The Mayor of Casterbridge" is a rich, psychological novel about a man whose own flaws combine with fate to cause his ruin. This Modern Library Paperback Classic reprints the authoritative 1912 Wessex edition, as well as Hardy's map of Wessex.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik / Amerikanistik), course: Seminar 'Strange Fruits', 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Soon after its publication on March 1st 1940 it seemed to be clear that "Native Son" was the great breakthrough in the career of the young black author Richard Wright. In his masterpiece, Richard Wright portrays the life of the 20 - year old protagonist Bigger Thomas who lives with his mother, sister and brother in a shabby, rat - infested one - bedroom apartment on the South Side of Chicago, known as the "Black Belt". His father died long ago and his mother s wage is meager. Consequently, Bigger had to leave school early and grows up poor and uneducated in the segregated society of the late 1930s . His childhood and adolescence have been filled with hostility and oppression and he seems to be destined to meet a bad fate... Whereas most critics agreed on the fact that this novel was powerful enough to grip the reader with or against his will, the novel s protagonist - Bigger Thomas - seemed to have arisen a lot of controversy in most of the reviews. In the following essay I will analyse the complex character of the protagonist and draw a conclusion on the question whether Bigger Thomas is a subhuman monster, a victim of society, a tragic hero, a bit of everything - or none of it at all...

The anti-hero Billy Pilgrim and his double role in the novel "Slaughter-House Five" by Kurt Vonnegut

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Bamberg, language: English, abstract: In this essay the author analyzes Kurt Vonnegut’s novel "Slaughter-House Five". The essay will examine both its form and content and analyzes how these components are willingly put in a contradictory relationship and how Vonnegut unexpectedly relies on ironic devices in order to describe the horrible conditions of the American soldiers in Germany. After that, the author argues how the character of Billy Pilgrim, with his anti-heroic aptitude, serves as a means of criticism to the indifference and the rampant materialism getting hold of the American society and how Billy purports an unconventional (and for some aspects controversial) life philosophy that still wants to bring about a deeper reflection on the responsibility of the individual in the process of social change.
