The NPEC Sourcebook on Assessment: Defintions and assessment methods for critical thinking, problem solving, and writing
Author: T. Dary Erwin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 136
Book Description
Volume 1 of this sourcebook is a compendium of information about tests used to assess critical thinking, problem solving, and writing. It serves as a tool for people who want comparative data about the policy relevance of specific student outcomes measured in these areas. An interactive version of Volume 1 allows users to specify their areas of interest and create a customized search of assessment measures in the three domain areas. The tests described in Volume 1 are those that are designed to measure cognitive variables for traditional students. The compendium does not describe less traditional methods such as portfolios and competencies. In addition, the evaluations of the tests are based on the way test developers represent them in their materials and, in some cases, in information from third-part reviews. Volume 2 is a companion volume that provides eight case studies of institutions that have addressed related issues through the use of assessment methods in Volume 1. Volume 1 contains the following sections: (1) "General and Specific Issues in Selecting Assessments"; (2) "Critical Thinking and Problem Solving"; (3) "Templates--Critical Thinking and Problem Solving"; (4) "Writing"; (5) "Templates--Writing Commercially Developed Tests"; and (6) "Templates--Writing Locally Developed Tests." Volume 2 discusses the eight case studies and contains four appendixes providing details about the methodology. (Volume 1 contains 10 tables and 150 references.) (SLD)

Book Description
This volume offers a systematic review of the literature on communication education and instruction. The topics covered here are meaningful and relevant to classroom practice, and each chapter offers a summary of existing quantitative social science research using meta-analysis. With contributions from experienced researchers throughout the communication discipline, this work provides a unique analysis of research in instructional communication. Taken together, the chapters in this volume enhance understanding of behaviors, practices, and processes that promote positive student outcomes. This book is a must-read for scholars, graduate students, and researchers in communication education, and will also be of interest to scholars and researchers in education.

Revisiting Outcomes Assessment in Higher Education
Author: Peter Hernon
Publisher: Libraries Unlimited
ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 496
Book Description
Revisiting Outcomes Assessment in Higher Education compliments rather than updates Hernon and Dugan's 2004 Outcomes Assessment in Higher Education. As with its predecessor, it offers a cross-campus diversity of voices: contributors hail from various segments of higher organizations, an academic vice president, academic deans, a higher education consultant, faculty members, and librarians. Individually, they shed light on how their corner of the higher education universe views, facilitates, and substantiates outcomes assessment. Together, they document what is known about outcomes assessment in the middle of the first decade of the new century, as institutions and their programs take ever-firmer steps from anecdotal evidence to more rigorous diagnosis and reporting.
