The Museum Environment

The Museum Environment PDF Author: Garry Thomson
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483102718
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
The Museum Environment, Second Edition deals with the behavior and conservation of the various classes of museum exhibit. This book is divided into six sections that provide museum specifications for conservation. This text highlights the three contributing factors in the deterioration and decay of museum exhibits, namely light, humidity, and air pollution. Each section describes the mechanism of deterioration and the appropriate “preventive conservation . The changes in this edition from the previous include the electronic hygrometry, fluorescent lamps, buffered cases, air conditioning systems, and data logging and control in historic buildings. This book is of great value to conservation researchers and museum workers.

Cracks in composite materials

Cracks in composite materials PDF Author: George C. Sih
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400983409
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 617

Book Description
Composites offer great promise as light weight and strong materials for high performance structures. One of the major advantages of these materials as compared with metals is the basic way in which heterogeneity resist crack extension. In a fiber/matrix composite system, the fibers tend to cause cracks to form at closer spacing and delay the formation of a large crack. The enhancement of local failure such as fiber breaking, matrix cracking and interface debonding further reduces the energy level which might have otherwise reached the point of catastrophic failure. Even though substantial tests have been made on composite materials, little has been gained in the understanding and development of a predic tive procedure for composite failure. There are fundamental difficulties associated with incorporating the nonhomogeneous and anisotropic prop erties of the composite into the continuum mechanics analysis. Additional uncertainties arise from voids and defects that are introduced in the composite during manufacturing. Even a small quantity of mechanical imperfections can cause a marked influence on the composite strength. Moreover, the interface properties between the fibers and matrix or bonded laminae can also affect the load transmission characteristics significantly. It would be impossible to establish predictive procedures for composite failure unless realistic guidelines could be developed to control the manufacturing quality of composite systems.

Small Fatigue Cracks: Mechanics, Mechanisms and Applications

Small Fatigue Cracks: Mechanics, Mechanisms and Applications PDF Author: K.S. Ravichandran
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 9780080569703
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 498

Book Description
This book contains the fully peer-reviewed papers presented at the Third Engineering Foundation Conference on Small Fatigue Cracks, held under the chairmanship of K.S. Ravichandran and Y. Murakami during December 6-11, 1998, at the Turtle Bay Hilton, Oahu, Hawaii. This book presents a state-of-the-art description of the mechanics, mechanisms and applications of small fatigue cracks by most of the world's leading experts in this field. Topics ranging from the mechanisms of crack initiation, small crack behavior in metallic, intermetallic, ceramic and composite materials, experimental measurement, mechanistic and theoretical models, to the role of small cracks in fretting fatigue and the application of small crack results to the aging aircraft and high-cycle fatigue problems, are covered.

Fitness-for-Service Fracture Assessment of Structures Containing Cracks

Fitness-for-Service Fracture Assessment of Structures Containing Cracks PDF Author: Uwe Zerbst
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 9780080552835
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
The purpose of Fitness-for-Service Fracture Assessment of Structures Containing Cracks is to facilitate the use of fracture mechanics based failure assessment procedures for the evaluation and design of structures and components. All practical structures contain flaws and the optimum combination of cost efficiency and safety whilst achieving the required capability, can only be realised by using state of the art methods such as that represented by the European flaw assessment method SINTAP/FITNET to analyse the safety risk. This book is written by practitioners with extensive experience in both the development and use of integrity assessment methods and provides comprehensive information on the basic principles and use of analytical flaw assessment. It provides an introduction to the method, its background, how it can be applied, its potential and, importantly, its limitations. The explanations are complimented by using a large number of worked examples and validation exercises which illustrate all aspects of the procedure. In addition, for students and engineers who are new to the subject, a comprehensive glossary of basic terms used in fracture mechanics based integrity evaluations is included. The topics addressed include: Crack driving force (CDF) and failure assessment diagram (FAD) type analyses Preparation of the input parameters (crack dimensions, stress-strain properties, fracture toughness, statistical aspects) Determination of the model parameters, (stress intensity factor and yield load solutions) Treatment of combined primary and secondary loading, together with residual stress effects Analysis of the effect of constraint effects (treatment of small defects and section size effects) Treatment of mixed mode loading Consideration of the influences of strength mismatch Reliability aspects Comprehensive description of the use of structural integrity methods to optimise cost effectiveness and safety Detailed description of how to evaluate the integrity of structures containing cracks Valuable background information for understanding the methods, their potential and limitations Large number of worked examples, which demonstrate all aspects of the methods Descriptive, readable writing style Applicable to a wide range of interests, from the student (university or self study) to the expert who requires a 'state of the art' document
