Visualising Small Traumas PDF Author: Pedro Moura
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 9462703035
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
Cultural history of contemporary Portuguese comics and their creative responses to trauma Portugal's vibrant comics scene originated as early as the 19th century, bringing forth brilliant individual artists, but has remained mostly unknown beyond Portugal’s borders to this day. Now a new generation employs this medium to put into question hegemonic views on the economy, politics, and society. Following the experience of the financial crisis of the past decades and its impact on social policies, access to and rules of public discourse, and civil strife, comics have questioned what constitutes a traumatogenic situation and what can act as a creative response. By looking at established graphic novels by Marco Mendes and Miguel Rocha, fanzine-level, and even experimental productions, Visualising Small Traumas is the first English-language book that addresses Portuguese contemporary comics and investigates how trauma studies can both shed a light on comics making and be informed by that very same practice. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).

Small Wonders

Small Wonders PDF Author: Joan Lovett
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439137382
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
Childhood can be an exciting time, full of joyous exploration, new skills, friends, and imaginative play. It can also be very frightening, especially when children have experiences that threaten their feelings of safety and well-being. Even common traumatic childhood events can deeply affect children's normal healthy development, their self-esteem, and their families. Many behavioral problems stemming from common traumatic events could require years of psychotherapy or medication. That is, they did -- until the advent of EMDR. Developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR had already helped thousands of adult clients when Joan Lovett experienced its healing power firsthand. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a comprehensive therapeutic approach that helps patients release disturbing thoughts and emotions that originate in traumatic experiences. Experiences can be traumatic in the commonly accepted sense -- abuse, disasters, violence -- but children may also perceive and respond to more ordinary events as very threatening. A playground accident, the loss of a loved one, school problems, or choking on a piece of popcorn can be a part of growing up. They can also be critical incidents that cause a child to view him- or herself as helpless or powerless, to become fearful, and to develop debilitating behavioral problems. In Small Wonders: Healing Childhood Trauma with EMDR, Joan Lovett, M.D., shares engaging clinical stories -- mysteries involving children who present her with puzzling and disturbing behaviors. She imaginatively focuses her knowledge of pediatrics, play therapy, and EMDR to alleviate the real-life ordeals of real-life children. Featuring a foreword by Francine Shapiro, Small Wonders is the most comprehensive and insightful book to explore the potential of EMDR for child therapy. This enlightening book is intended for parents who are concerned with having their children feel confident, for adults who want insights into the way the events of their childhood shaped their self-image, and for professionals who want to know more about EMDR and how it can be adapted to meet the special needs of traumatized children.

Trauma and Combat Critical Care in Clinical Practice

Trauma and Combat Critical Care in Clinical Practice PDF Author: Sam D. Hutchings
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319287583
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 529

Book Description
Intensive Care Medicine (or Critical Care, the terms are used interchangeably) is an evolving specialty both within the UK and worldwide. It has recently been established as a UK speciality in it’s own right, and is at the centre of the modern acute hospital, responsible for managing the sickest and most complex patients. There is a growing cadre of critical care specialists in the UK, underpinned by a large number of doctors in training within the specialty. Management of patients with severe traumatic injury is provided by intensive care specialists, often in conjunction with a range of other professionals such as surgeons and interventional radiologists. The management of these patients, who have competing complex injuries can be challenging. Traumatic injury is recognised as a significant cause of preventable mortality and such patients are now clustered within Major Trauma Centres across the UK. The Defence Medical Services of the UK have spent the last 10 years managing patients with very severe traumatic injuries, first in Iraq and most recently in Afghanistan. The lessons learnt from this experience has filtered through to the NHS, resulting in many changes to established practice. Whilst several books have been published based on this experience, none have focused on the intensive care management of such patients, which represents a vital link in the chain of survival from injury to recovery.

Textbook of Acute Trauma Care

Textbook of Acute Trauma Care PDF Author: Peter Lax
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030836282
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 829

Book Description
This book provides a systemic approach to acute trauma care in line with the ABCDE paradigm and up-to-date information on assessing and managing major trauma from the pre-hospital to the rehabilitation phase. The book's early sections are dedicated to identifying and managing pathology caused by massive haemorrhage, airway, breathing, circulation or neurological trauma and examining the current evidence base relating to their management. The book then builds from fundamental skills to advanced interventions so that each level of responder can identify and implement aspects of clinical practice that will be of benefit to them at their stage. This approach also explains advanced interventions that may be executed subsequently, explaining how each phase of care sits together. This has a further benefit of producing seamless care for patients by practitioners of different levels using this book as a reference point. Later sections deal with specifics of in-hospital trauma care by speciality, including the explanation of decision making processes by specialities, use of diagnostic and interventional radiology, rehabilitation and psychological aspects of trauma care. The Textbook of Acute Trauma Care also focuses on non-clinical issues relevant to trauma such as training and logistics of retrieval and repatriation, aviation considerations in HEMS, legal and forensic evidence considerations and ethical issues dealing with trauma patients. In addition, the book contains chapters from international experts on cognitive and human factors relating to healthcare and suggests strategies for training and minimising errors. This book is an essential resource for all grades of practitioner, from first responders to Consultant/Attending Physician level providers.
