A Dangerous Place

A Dangerous Place PDF Author: Simon Farquhar
Publisher: The History Press
ISBN: 0750969520
Category : True Crime
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
SHORTLISTED FOR THE CRIME WRITER'S ASSOCIATION GOLD DAGGER AWARD FOR NON-FICTION. IN SEPTEMBER 1970, two boys met in the playground on their first day at secondary school in North London. They formed what would be described at the Old Bailey thirty years later as ‘a unique and wicked bond’. Between 1982 and 1986, striking near lonely railway stations in London and the Home Counties, their partnership took them from rape to murder. Three police forces pooled their resources to catch them in the biggest criminal manhunt since the Yorkshire Ripper Enquiry.A Dangerous Place is the first full-length account of the crimes of John Duffy and David Mulcahy. Told by the son of one of the police officers who led the enquiry, exhaustively researched and with unprecedented access, this is the story of two of the most notorious serial killers of the twentieth century and the times they operated in. It is the story of the women who died at their hands. It is the story of the women who survived them, and who had the courage to ensure justice was done. And it is the story of a father, told by a son.

Something Dangerous

Something Dangerous PDF Author: Merrill Singer
Publisher: Waveland Press
ISBN: 1478610271
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
This research-based, theory-driven ethnographic account of the changing underground world of drug use and associated health effects covers the essential ground in a succinct, authoritative fashion. After a thorough outline of the nature and history of drug use dynamics, the author assesses the role of youth in new drug use practices, the impact of illicit drug distribution and the war on drugs, and the public health risks of trends in drug use behavior. Additionally, it considers mechanisms for effective public health response to emergent health risks associated with changing drug use patterns. Because Singer carefully explains all technical terms, uses clarifying examples, and avoids jargon, readers will walk away from this volume with a deeper grasp of this social problem; with appreciation for how change figures into drug use practices; and with knowledge of key social, cultural, political-economic, criminal justice, and health factors. Ideal as a text in the undergraduate classroom, its targeted focus and careful exploration of new concepts and theories also make it appealing for use at more advanced levels.

Moral Threats and Dangerous Desires

Moral Threats and Dangerous Desires PDF Author: Deborah Lupton
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113534146X
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
Since 1981, AIDS has had an enormous impact upon the popular imagination. Few other diseases this century have been greeted with quite the same fear, loathing, and prejudice against those who develop it. The mass media, and in particular, the news media, have played a vital part in "making sense" of AIDS. This volume takes an interdisciplinary perspective, combining cultural studies, history of medicine, and contemporary social theory to examine AIDS reporting. There have been three major themes dominating coverage: the "gay-plague" dominant in the early 1980s, panic-stricken visions of the end of the world as AIDS was said to pose a threat to everyone, in the late 1980s; and a growing routinising of coverage in the 1990s. This book lays bare the sub-textual ideologies giving meaning to AIDS news reports, including anxieties about pollution and contagion, deviance, bodily control, the moral meanings of risk, the valorisation of drugs and medical science. Drawing together the work of cultural and politicaltheorists, sociologists and historians who have written about medicine, disease and the body, as well as that of theorists in Europe and the USA who have focused their attention specificaiiy on AIDS, this book explores the wide theoretical debate about the importance of language in the social construction of illness and disease. This text offers insights into the sociocultural context in which attitudes towards people with HIV or AIDS and people's perceptions of risk from HIV infection are developed and the responses of governments to the AIDS epidemic are formulated.
