Interpreters continue to debate whether the ascetic language of the statement reflects the views of Paul or the Corinthians. Using evidence from Egyptian census papyri, he demonstrates the prevalence of secular singleness in Roman urban environments. Paul is traditionally seen as one of the founders of Christian sexual asceticism. As early as the second century C.E., church leaders looked to him as a model for their lives of abstinence.
