London in a Box PDF Author: Odai Johnson
Publisher: University of Iowa Press
ISBN: 1609384946
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
2017 Theatre Library Association Freedley Award Finalist In this remarkable feat of historical research, Odai Johnson pieces together the surviving fragments of the story of the first professional theatre troupe based in the British North American colonies. In doing so, he tells the story of how colonial elites came to decide they would no longer style themselves British gentlemen, but instead American citizens. London in a Box chronicles the enterprise of David Douglass, founder and manager of the American Theatre, from the 1750s to the climactic 1770s. How he built this network of patrons and theatres and how it all went up in flames as the revolution began is the subject of this witty history. A treat for anyone interested in the world of the American Revolution and an important study for historians of the period.

Book Description
2017 Theatre Library Association Freedley Award Finalist If one went looking for the tipping point in the prelude to the American Revolution, it would not be the destruction of the tea in Boston Harbor, or the blockade of Boston by British warships, or even the gathering of the first Continental Congress; rather, it was the Congress’s decision in late October of 1774 to close the theatres. In this remarkable feat of historical research, Odai Johnson pieces together the surviving fragments of the story of the first professional theatre troupe based in the British North American colonies. In doing so, he tells the story of how colonial elites came to decide they would no longer style themselves British gentlemen, but instead American citizens. London in a Box chronicles the enterprise of David Douglass, founder and manager of the American Theatre, from the 1750s to the climactic 1770s. The ambitious Scotsman’s business was teaching provincial colonials to dress and behave as genteel British subjects. Through the plays he staged, the scenery and costumes, and the bearing of his actors, he displayed London fashion and London manners. He counted among his patrons the most influential men in America, from British generals and governors to local leaders, including the avid theatre-goers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. By 1774, Douglass operated a monopoly of theatres in six colonies and the Anglophone Caribbean, from Jamaica to Charleston and northward to New York City. (Boston remained an impregnable redoubt against theatre.) How he built this network of patrons and theatres and how it all went up in flames as the revolution began is the subject of this witty history. A treat for anyone interested in the world of the American Revolution and an important study for historians of the period.

The Emperor of Scent

The Emperor of Scent PDF Author: Chandler Burr
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 1588362604
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
For as long as anyone can remember, a man named Luca Turin has had an uncanny relationship with smells. He has been compared to the hero of Patrick Süskind’s novel Perfume, but his story is in fact stranger, because it is true. It concerns how he made use of his powerful gifts to solve one of the last great mysteries of the human body: how our noses work. Luca Turin can distinguish the components of just about any smell, from the world’s most refined perfumes to the air in a subway car on the Paris metro. A distinguished scientist, he once worked in an unrelated field, though he made a hobby of collecting fragrances. But when, as a lark, he published a collection of his reviews of the world’s perfumes, the book hit the small, insular business of perfume makers like a thunderclap. Who is this man Luca Turin, they demanded, and how does he know so much? The closed community of scent creation opened up to Luca Turin, and he discovered a fact that astonished him: no one in this world knew how smell worked. Billions and billions of dollars were spent creating scents in a manner amounting to glorified trial and error. The solution to the mystery of every other human sense has led to the Nobel Prize, if not vast riches. Why, Luca Turin thought, should smell be any different? So he gave his life to this great puzzle. And in the end, incredibly, it would seem that he solved it. But when enormously powerful interests are threatened and great reputations are at stake, Luca Turin learned, nothing is quite what it seems. Acclaimed writer Chandler Burr has spent four years chronicling Luca Turin’s quest to unravel the mystery of how our sense of smell works. What has emerged is an enthralling, magical book that changes the way we think about that area between our mouth and our eyes, and its profound, secret hold on our lives.

The Greengage Summer

The Greengage Summer PDF Author: Rumer Godden
Publisher: Open Road Media
ISBN: 1504040376
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
A sixteen-year-old girl captures the dangerous attention of an older man in this New York Times–bestselling novel by the author of Black Narcissus. Soon after the end of the terrible Great War, Mrs. Grey brings her five young children to the French countryside for the summer in hopes of instilling in them a sense of history and humility. But when she is struck down by a sudden illness and hospitalized, the siblings are left to fend for themselves at the lovely, bullet-scarred hotel Les Oeillets, under the suspicious, watchful eyes of its owner, Mademoiselle Zizi. The young ones find a willing guide, companion, and protector in charming Englishman Eliot, a longtime resident at Les Oeillets and Mlle. Zizi’s apparent paramour. But as these warm days of freedom, discovery, and adolescent adventure unfold, Eliot’s interest becomes more and more focused on the eldest of the Grey children, sixteen-year-old daughter Joss. The older man’s obsession with the innocent, alluring, heartbreakingly beautiful woman-child soon threatens to overstep all bounds of propriety. And as Eliot’s fascination increases, so does the jealousy of his disrespected lover, adding fuel to a dangerously smoldering fire that could erupt into unexpected violence at any moment. Told from the point of view of Cecil, Joss’s sharp-eyed younger sister, The Greengage Summer is a beautiful, poignant, darkly tinged coming-of-age story rich in the sights, smells, and sounds of France’s breathtaking Champagne country. It remains one of the crowning literary achievements of Rumer Godden, acclaimed author of beloved classics Black Narcissus, The River, and In This House of Brede. This ebook features an illustrated biography of the author including rare images from the Rumer Godden Literary Estate.

Book Description
USA Today Bestselling Author, Lexy Timms, brings you the first three books in the Billionaire in London series in one collection! Book 1 Love is not something you protect. It's something you risk. Daniel Connor has a problem. A big one. Even though his company is a billion-dollar success in the hospitality industry, he's just opened a few new properties in the United States and is failing at every turn. He's never met a problem he couldn't solve, but this particular problem is beyond him. He needs an expert. A fixer. Enter Eleanor Sawyer, fixer extraordinaire. Though she generally only works in the US, the salary Daniel offers her—and the good looks she sees across their first meeting—are impossible for her to turn down, and she makes the journey to the UK to work with his company on their problems. But the UK isn't as easy to navigate as she expected, and when she ends up living on Daniel's property outside the city—and needing to call him every time something goes wrong—she starts to think there might be more to life in England than just fixing a company's issues. This contract was never meant to be anything but professional. The problem is, the longer Daniel and Eleanor work together, the more personal it becomes. And neither one of them is all that interested in changing it. Book 2 You have everything you need to build something bigger than yourself… Daniel Connor, owner and CEO of Connor Hotels, and Eleanor Sawyer, the fixer he hired to solve his company's problems in the American market, have come to the US to do research and get a closer view of what might be going wrong. The problem is, before they left the UK, they shared a number of adventures and one steamy kiss that left them both wanting more… and afraid to admit it. Now that they're in the US and Daniel has decided to play tourist, they're in for a few new adventures, and with all the feelings they've got bubbling under the surface, and another steamy kiss on the schedule, both are wondering whether they're going to be able to see this contract out and save the chain of hotels… or throw in the towel and make the most unprofessional move ever by admitting their feelings for one another. Book 3 Sometimes sacrifices are worth the cost. Even, or perhaps most especially, those made out of love. Eleanor Sawyer is a fixer. People pay her to fix their companies for them, and she's never met a problem she couldn't figure out. Until Daniel Connor hired her. And it's not his company she's having problems with. No, she has a plan for how to increase Connor Hotels' sales in the American market, and it's good enough that she's impressing even herself. When it comes to figure out Daniel himself, though, and those flashing eyes, smiling lips, and flirty looks… along with the occasional kiss… she's finding herself at a complete loss. She doesn't know if she wants to play along or tell him to remember who she is: just another employee. Because now she's got an even bigger problem. She's starting to fall in love with him.
