The importance of detailed examination and theoretical interpretation of the single case has been increasingly recognized in neuropsychology. This book brings together in one volume discussion of the classic cases which have shaped the way we think about the relationships between brain, behaviour and cognition. The single cases covered may be ancient or modern, famous or less well-known. But the book is comprehensive in its coverage of contemporary neuropsychological issues. Represented are classic cases in language, memory, perception, attention and praxis. Some of the cases included are rare, or have acted as catalysts to the development of theory. Some have remained the definitive case; many were the first of their type to be described and gave rise to the development of new syndrome entities. Some are still controversial. In some instances, the cases resulted in major paradigm shifts. Some, while still highly influential, were misinterpreted. But most of them were read only by a few in their original form. Each chapter highlights the relevance of the case for the development of neuropsychology, describes the particular features of the case that are interesting and discusses the theoretical implications.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) awarded us a grant to conduct an Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Neuropsychology and Cognition. The ASI was conducted at Augusta, Georgia, USA, from September 8-18, 1980. Two volumes resulted from this Institute. Volume one consists of chapters from Corballis, Dimond, Spreen, Bakker, Pirozzolo, Aaron, Whitaker and Zangwill. Corballis discusses the evolution of laterality and Dimond presents specialization of hemispheric functions. Neuropsychological assess ment is the theme of Spreen's chapter and neuropsychological aspects of dyslexia is examined by Bakker, Pirozzolo, and Aaron. Whitaker analyzes a rare form of language impairment. The volume closes with a critical review of cerebral dominance by Zangwill. Volume two deals with such topics as hemispheric specialization neuropsychological assessment, neuropsychological aspects of cogni tion, language, and reading, and research implications in neuro psychology. These two volumes will be useful to practicing clinicians, educationists, psychologists, linguists, speech pathologists and audiologists. We sincerely thank NATO Scientific Affairs Division for their financial and moral support. The Institute was successful because of the generous help from the Oregon State University, Medical College of Georgia, and the Augusta Hilton. Substance use continues to be a major public health problem, and the ramifications of this are manifold. For instance, at present, on a yearly basis, the total economic cost of substance misuse is literally hundreds of billions of dollars. These costs are related to a number of factors, including, but not limited to, treatment and prevention, reduced job productivity and/or absenteeism, interdiction by the criminal justice, and incarceration. There are many more psychosocial consequences of substance misuse, and these have been well–documented over the past four to five decades; in contrast, with the exception of alcohol, the effects of substance misuse on the brain have received attention only in the past 10 to 15 years. An emerging body of literature has reported on the effects of various drugs on neuropsychological functioning, including benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana, MDMA, methamphetamine, nicotine, and opioids. Despite the fact that the neuropsychological consequences of many drugs of abuse are well–documented, to our knowledge, no one had previously published an edited volume that focused exclusively on this issue.
