Halifax in the Great War

Halifax in the Great War PDF Author: David Millichope
Publisher: Casemate Publishers
ISBN: 1473866162
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 267

Book Description
Halifax was surprised by the outbreak of war in August 1914 but within days the public mood had turned into a staggering display of unified support. Voluntary fund raising organisations sprang up and bore witness to an incredible self-help ethic that supported the troops at the front, their dependant families at home and the returning wounded. People came to fear the Zeppelins, were forced to retrieve their children from German naval guns in Scarborough and read with horror the stories of local lads gassed at the front. Residents of German descent found themselves in difficult situations, and Belgian refugees were offered sanctuary.Struggling local industry was revitalised by government orders for Khaki cloth, machine tools and munitions. Halifax can claim to have contributed many interesting technological items such as bomb release mechanisms, flame projectors and Tommy's iconic bowl shaped steel helmet. Women were increasingly employed in traditional male occupations. In 1917 the food crisis fermented tensions, but at the end of 1918 there was triumph of a sort.

Leeds Rifles

Leeds Rifles PDF Author: Andrew J. Kirk
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1526711524
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
The first detailed chronicle, with photos included, of the four battalions of riflemen who left Leeds for the Western Front. The full wartime story of the “Leeds Pals” has never been told. This volume describes their volunteer origins and how they came to be woven into the social fabric of Leeds from where they drew their enduring esprit de corps, discipline, and resolve. It takes the reader on a journey across the Western Front of the Great War, contrasting the first line battalion’s lot, to stand in the mud of Ypres and endure all without breaking, with the second line battalion’s blooding at Bullecourt and transformation as part of an elite assault division that went on to occupy Germany. It is told, in part, by those who were there and experienced the fear, elation, and sadness of loss, and who took strength from their volunteer ethos and their common origins in Leeds. All the Leeds Rifles’ main battles are described in detail as are the helter-skelter actions of the last one hundred days of mobile warfare and escalating casualties, when the defeated but still defiant German army found itself in full and final retreat. Follow the fortunes of these enfants de Yorkshire, these Leeds Lads, as they speak out from the pages of history with a very familiar accent.

Rats Alley

Rats Alley PDF Author: Peter Chasseaud
Publisher: The History Press
ISBN: 0750984902
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 896

Book Description
When first published in 2006, Rats Alley was a ground-breaking piece of research, the first-ever study of trench names of the Western Front. Now, in this fully updated and revised second edition, the gazetteer has been extended to well over 20,000 trench names, complete with map references – in itself an essential tool for any First World War researcher. However, combined with the finely considered history and analysis of trench naming during the First World War, this is an edition that no military history enthusiast should be without. Discover when, how and why British trenches were first named and follow the names' fascinating development throughout the First World War, alongside details of French and German trench-naming practices. Looked at from both contemporary and modern points of view, the names reveal the full horror of trench warfare and throw an extraordinary sidelight on the cultural life of the period, and the landscape and battles of the Western Front. Names such as Lovers Lane, Idiot Corner, Cyanide Trench, Crazy Redoubt, Doleful Post, Furies Trench, Peril Avenue, Lunatic Sap and Gangrene Alley can be placed in context. With useful information on where original trench maps are held, and how to obtain copies, Rats Alley is a vital volume for both military and family historians.
