Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum

Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum PDF Author: Eliphas Levi
Publisher: Ibis Western Mystery Tradition
ISBN: 9780892541065

Book Description
Eliphas Levi (1810-1875) was the greatest innovator in the revival of Western occultism, most significantly with his great leap of imagination that linked the tarot trumps to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. He set out this tarot theory in his book Transcendental Magic, but never revealed its magical application. This was finally made public in 1896 when Dr. Westcott--creator of the Golden Dawn--translated and printed Levi's secret manuscript. It is this rare text that we are now re-issuing. This book aligns the major arcana symbolism with a detailed description of the ritual of the sanctum regnum, or Kingdom of God.

Book Description
On the brink of mystery, the spirit of man is seized with giddiness. Mystery is the abyss which ceaselessly attracts our unquiet curiosity by the terror of its depth. The greatest mystery of the infinite is the existence of Him for whom alone all is without mystery. Comprehending the infinite which is essentially incomprehensible, He is Himself that infinite and eternally unfathomable mystery; that is to say, that He is, in all seeming, that supreme absurdity in which Tertullian believed. Necessarily absurd, since reason must renounce for ever the project of attaining to Him; necessarily credible, since science and reason, far from demonstrating that He does not exist, are dragged by the chariot of fatality to believe that He does exist, and to adore Him themselves with closed eyes. Why? Because this Absurd is the infinite source of reason. The light springs eternally from the eternal shadows. Science, that Babel Tower of the spirit, may twist and coil its spirals ever ascending as it will; it may make the earth tremble, it will never touch the sky. God is He whom we shall eternally learn to know better, and, consequently, He whom we shall never know entirely.

Book Description
First published in 1896, “The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum” is an interesting dissertation on the ruling of the world by the seven great archangels written by Éliphas Lévi, (1810 – 1875), a French author of occult literature and ceremonial magician. In this vintage volume, Lévi outlines how the world is ruled by one of the seven archangels, each for a period of 354 years. The archangels are represented by celestial bodies, with Michael being the sun, Gabriel being the moon, Samael, Mars, etc. This volume will appeal to those with an interest in the occult, and it is not to be missed by collectors of vintage esoteric literature. Contents include: “The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum”, “The Priestess – La Papesse”, “The Empress – L'imperatrice”, “The Emperor”, “L'Emereur”, “The Pope of Hierophant – Le Pape”, “The Lovers – L'amoureux”, “The Chariot of Hermes – Le Chariot”, “Justice – La Justice”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Book Description
The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum is a strange mystic work created by Eliphas Levi and translated posthumously into English by W. Wynn Westcott. The work subjugates various magical principles and ideas to the tarot trumps, such as the tower, the devil, the hierophant, and such. The work mixes Rosicrucian and alchemical materials in with those of Kabbalah, and the end of the work is a lengthy section of ritual practices and prayers along similar lines.A note by Westcott at the end of the work indicates a belief that Levi essentially renounces the entire work at the end with a decidedly Catholic screed. Whether this is actually indicative of the same, or of an attempt to evade censorship, is debatable.

Book Description
This volume represents the high-water mark of the thought of Eliphas Levi. It may be regarded as written by him as his Thesis for the Grade of Exempt Adept, just as his "Ritual and Dogma" was his Thesis for the grade of a Major Adept. He is, in fact, no longer talking of things as if their sense was fixed and universal. He is beginning to see something of the contradiction inherent in the nature of things, or at any rate, he constantly illustrates the fact that the planes are to be kept separate for practical purposes, although in the final analysis they turn out to be one. This, and the extraordinarily subtle and delicate irony of which Eliphas Levi is one of the greatest masters that has ever lived, have baffled the pedantry and stupidity of such commentators as Waite.
