Book Description
Bobby "Blue" Bland's silky smooth vocal style and captivating live performances helped propel the blues out of Delta juke joints and into urban clubs and upscale theaters. Until now, his story has never been told in a book-length biography. Soul of the Man: Bobby "Blue" Bland relates how Bland, along with longtime friend B. B. King, and other members of the loosely knit group who called themselves the Beale Streeters, forged a new electrified blues style in Memphis in the early 1950s. Combining elements of Delta blues, southern gospel, big-band jazz, and country and western music, Bland and the Beale Streeters were at the heart of a revolution. This biography traces Bland's life and recording career, from his earliest work through his first big hit in 1957, "Farther Up the Road." It goes on to tell the story of how Bland scored hit after hit, placing more than sixty songs on the R&B charts throughout the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. While more than two-thirds of his hits crossed over onto pop charts, Bland is surprisingly not widely known outside the African American community. Nevertheless, many of his recordings are standards, and he has created scores of hit albums such as his classic 1961 Two Steps from the Blues, widely considered one of the best blues albums of all time. Soul of the Man contains a select discography of the most significant recordings made by Bland, as well as a list of all his major awards. A four-time Grammy nominee, he received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Blues Foundation, as well as the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame. This biography at last heralds one of America's great music makers.

Book Description
Henry Scougal's, The Life of God in the Soul of Man, continues to provide the most accurate description of real Christianity. It also provides the reader with the differences between true Christianity and the many pretenders that have arisen over the centuries since its inception. That is one good reason this book, originally published in 1677, continues to sell. It is a must read for anyone who is serious about finding the narrow gate and walking the narrow path that leads to life. In this book, Scougal deals with topics such as: eternal life, born again, salvation, faith, loving God, experiencing God's presence, absolute surrender, finding peace with God, the nature of God, the character of God, God's grace, God's care for us, the sovereignty of God, power to live, abundant life, victory over sin, victory over the world, spiritual growth, developing a personal relationship with God, loving others, transformation, renewing the mind, obedience, holiness, pleasing God, doing God's will, worshipping God, real humility, real purity, effective prayer, meditation, false ideas about Christianity, the fallen nature, worldly vision vs eternal vision, worshipping in vain, surface religion vs internal religion, hypocrisy, and distinguishing between spirit, soul, and flesh. This book is recommended for establishing new believers in the faith and helping them grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is perfectly suited for discipleship, group study, and spiritual development courses. Scougal's book gives us an opportunity to look back into time at historical, classical Christianity. It is a monument in the advancement and improvement of the Protestant Reformation. Therefore, the reader can better distinguish the differences between the many errors in modern Christianity and Christianity prior to these modern deviations. God has used this book in bringing revivals. Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, who were instrumental during the Great Awakening, testified to the importance of this book in their own lives. Wesley gave Whitefield a copy of this book. For this reason, Whitefield's quote, "I never knew what real Christianity was until God sent me this excellent book" has adorned the covers of earlier printings. Readers familiar with the great works of Christian literature written in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries will recognize the influence this book had upon those authors. This book will prove to be very helpful to those who know the end time prophecies regarding the corruption, infiltration, and apostasy of organized religion. It will help them to set a course out of the slow fade and into personal revival. All these reasons make this book an invaluable asset to all who desire to grow in their relationship with God. The insights that Scougal penned regarding the deeper, more intimate walk with God will encourage new believers, the most devout saints, and everyone in between. And now there is even more reason for this book to remain popular. Words like adumbrate and inveigle have been replaced with everyday words. The original meanings of the many words and phrases that have changed with the passing of time have been raised from the dead. Now the average person can read and comprehend it without getting a migraine, or even dusting off an old dictionary. There is no longer any need to be reluctant to give this book to a friend or loved one due to the difficult language of the original. The reading is now smooth sailing. And yes, it will still amaze you with the depth of insight, incredible wisdom, and practical advice found in the original!

The Soul of America

The Soul of America PDF Author: Jon Meacham
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 039958983X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jon Meacham helps us understand the present moment in American politics and life by looking back at critical times in our history when hope overcame division and fear. ONE OF OPRAH’S “BOOKS THAT HELP ME THROUGH” • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • The Christian Science Monitor • Southern Living Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature” have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and Lyndon B. Johnson, and illuminating the courage of such influential citizen activists as Martin Luther King, Jr., early suffragettes Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt, civil rights pioneers Rosa Parks and John Lewis, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Army-McCarthy hearings lawyer Joseph N. Welch, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. He writes about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the birth of the Lost Cause; the backlash against immigrants in the First World War and the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s; the fight for women’s rights; the demagoguery of Huey Long and Father Coughlin and the isolationist work of America First in the years before World War II; the anti-Communist witch-hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy; and Lyndon Johnson’s crusade against Jim Crow. Each of these dramatic hours in our national life have been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back, to assert hope over fear—a struggle that continues even now. While the American story has not always—or even often—been heroic, we have been sustained by a belief in progress even in the gloomiest of times. In this inspiring book, Meacham reassures us, “The good news is that we have come through such darkness before”—as, time and again, Lincoln’s better angels have found a way to prevail. Praise for The Soul of America “Brilliant, fascinating, timely . . . With compelling narratives of past eras of strife and disenchantment, Meacham offers wisdom for our own time.”—Walter Isaacson “Gripping and inspiring, The Soul of America is Jon Meacham’s declaration of his faith in America.”—Newsday “Meacham gives readers a long-term perspective on American history and a reason to believe the soul of America is ultimately one of kindness and caring, not rancor and paranoia.”—USA Today

ISBN: 0847833704
Category : House & Home
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
From best-selling author and design icon Chris Madden comes the first book on her design philosophy, and how to achieve her comfortable, chic style. Design expert Chris Madden has spent years chronicling other people’s beautiful rooms. Now, for the first time, she presents her own design sensibility as illustrated by examples such as her elegant one hundred-year-old carriage house in upstate New York and a mid-century modern family getaway in the mountains of Vermont. Organized by type of room, each house is explored—from entryways to bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, mudrooms, greenhouses, and terraces, as well as specialty rooms like yoga studios and a man’s study—through rich photography and dozens of practical styling tips. Readers learn how to layer fabrics and colors for seasonal decorating; how to repurpose materials; and how to recognize a room’s quality of light. Also featured are sidebars on caring for guests, collecting, and living in an old house versus a modern house. An avid gardener, Madden explores the way outdoor space frames and supports a house. This lush and elegant volume is an eminently practical resource of ideas for creating rooms in which to celebrate family, entertain friends, and provide personal sanctuary.
