Book Description
Theory of Arched Structures: Strength, Stability, Vibration presents detailed procedures for analytical analysis of the strength, stability, and vibration of arched structures of different types, using exact analytical methods of classical structural analysis. The material discussed is divided into four parts. Part I covers stress and strain with a particular emphasis on analysis; Part II discusses stability and gives an in-depth analysis of elastic stability of arches and the role that matrix methods play in the stability of the arches; Part III presents a comprehensive tutorial on dynamics and free vibration of arches, and forced vibration of arches; and Part IV offers a section on special topics which contains a unique discussion of plastic analysis of arches and the optimal design of arches..

The History of the Theory of Structures

The History of the Theory of Structures PDF Author: Karl-Eugen Kurrer
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3433601348
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 864

Book Description
This book traces the evolution of theory of structures and strength of materials - the development of the geometrical thinking of the Renaissance to become the fundamental engineering science discipline rooted in classical mechanics. Starting with the strength experiments of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, the author examines the emergence of individual structural analysis methods and their formation into theory of structures in the 19th century. For the first time, a book of this kind outlines the development from classical theory of structures to the structural mechanics and computational mechanics of the 20th century. In doing so, the author has managed to bring alive the differences between the players with respect to their engineering and scientific profiles and personalities, and to create an understanding for the social context. Brief insights into common methods of analysis, backed up by historical details, help the reader gain an understanding of the history of structural mechanics from the standpoint of modern engineering practice. A total of 175 brief biographies of important personalities in civil and structural engineering as well as structural mechanics plus an extensive bibliography round off this work.

Arch Bridges

Arch Bridges PDF Author: A. Sinopoli
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000100243
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 450

Book Description
Modern structural engineering surprises us with the mastery and certainty with which it plans and carries out daring projects, such as the most recent metal or concrete bridges, whether they be suspension or arch bridges. On the other hand, little is yet known about the state of knowledge of construction science and techniques which, well before the arrival of modern methods based on the mechanics of deformable continua, made it possible in the past to erect the vaulted masonry structures rthat we have inherited. The fact that these have lasted through many centuries to our time, and are still in a fairly good state of conservation, makes them competitive, as far as stability and durability are concerned, with those constructed in other materials. Although it is known that the equilibrium of the arch is guaranteed by any funicular whatsoever of the loads, contained inside the profile of an arch, finding the unique solution is not such a certainty. In other words, the problem of the equilibrium of vaulted structures is 'Poleni's problem', the one for which the Venetian scientist was able to give an exemplary solution on the occasion of the assessment of the dome of St. Peter's. Arch Bridges focuses on the main aspects of the debate about the masonry arch bridge: History of structural mechanics and construction, theoretical models, analysis for assessment, numerical methods, experimental and non-destructive testing, maintenance and repair are the topics of the Conference. The breadth and variety of the contributions presented and discussed by leading experts from many countries make this volume an authoritative source of up-to-date information.

Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ... no danger of crushing from the horizontal thrust around "the second crown from the top, as stone will bear on a square unit a pillar of a square unit section and several thousand units high. Similarly for resultants on all the joints. We conclude that with the backing used and by increasing the depth of arch ring at the springing about onethird, the arch will be stable. FORMULAS FOB VOLUME. 75. When the soffit and exterior surface of the dome are both surfaces of spheres having the same centre, the volumes of the voussoirs are easily obtained. Thus, by geometry, the area of the zone formed by revolving an arc as rs (Fig. 22) about the axis ac is equal to the altitude h of rs multiplied by 2w, r being the radius as of the sphere. Pass now two meridian planes through ac, whose included angle is--of a circumference. The part of the zone included between them has an area so that the pyra n mid formed on this base with a vertex at a, 27tr'h na$ a volume----. 3n Similarly the pyramid having the part and h' = altitude of arc tv. Therefore the volume of the voussoir rstv included between the meridian planes and the conical joints rv and st is, where r and h are the radius and altitude of the exterior arc, r' and h' of the interior. If the altitudes of the type h are made equal in successive arcs, the values h' will all be equal. This can be shown as follows: Draw horizontal lines through r and v, Fig. 22, and drop verticals h and h' from s and t to them, and call the chords rs and vt, c and c', . from similar triangles, .-. When h is constant for successive arcs of the extrados, h' is similarly constant for the corresponding arcs of the intrados. Similarly the centre line of the arch ring will be divided into arcs of the same altitude when...

Safety of historical stone arch bridges

Safety of historical stone arch bridges PDF Author: Dirk Proske
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540776184
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
Historical stone arch bridges are still a major part of the infrastructure in many countries. Although this type of bridge has proven to be an efficient construction type, it often poses the problem of insufficient numerical models of the load bearing behavior. Therefore the book introduces methods to adapt life loads and introduces different types of numerical models of the load resistance respectively. The book continues with the introduction of specific damages and strengthening techniques. The book particularly focuses on the probabilistic safety assessment of historical arch bridges, for which often only limited material and structural data is available.
