Book Description
Going back to the roots: discover the truth about Hoodoo and harness the wisdom of your ancestors to bring happiness, health, and prosperity to your life -- even if you're an absolute beginner. Do you want to know more about your culture and the spiritual beliefs of your ancestors, but you don't know where to start? The more you read, the more confused you get, because you're getting lost in an ocean of contradictory information? This happens more often than you think, and here's why: Hoodoo is one of those "controversial" topics that are incredibly hard to research and explore. Not because there aren't many authentic sources -- but because there are so many false, unobjective ones. Throughout history, various religious and political groups (with the massive help of mainstream media) have depicted Hoodoo as something evil and demonic. Grave desecrations, devil worship, vandalism, human sacrifices... These are just some of the things associated with Hoodoo. But the truth is the complete opposite. At its core, Hoodoo is a practice that relies on love -- the love for your ancestors, your culture, your family, friends, and your fellow man. Hoodoo is an integral part of African-American communities, and it should be embraced and respected by the rest of the world -- not twisted around or used as a tourist attraction. Because of its bad history, Hoodoo practitioners have been forced many times to go underground. That's why learning the truth about the real Hoodoo is so hard -- but not for long. In this incredible guide, you'll discover the authentic Hoodoo -- the Hoodoo of your ancestors who have used its magic over many centuries to fight oppression and inequality... and bring peace and happiness to their lives. In Hoodoo, you will discover: ● An objective history of Hoodoo, from its roots in West Africa to modern times ● An overview of Hoodoo cosmology, beliefs, and practices ● A complete walkthrough of the basic tools of Hoodoo practitioners, including a guide on how to make your own Ancestral Altar ● The most comprehensive guide on herbal magic and rootwork, including a plethora of information on harvesting, storing, and drying your herbs ● Powerful White and Red magic spells every beginner can cast effortlessly, regardless of experience ● Detailed instructions on candle-making, including a guide on candle colors and oils for boosting the power of your spells ● Clear and precise instructions on making mojo bags for a variety of personal uses And much more. Your roots and your history are incredibly important -- they have shaped the community you live in, your family, your outlook on the world, and ultimately your life. With this guide, you have a chance to explore that history without the interference of unobjective and fake news. Discover the real Hoodoo and let your ancestors lead you to a better life.

Black Magic

Black Magic PDF Author: Yvonne P. Chireau
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520249887
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
"Chireau has written a marvelous text on an important dimension of African American religious culture. Expanding beyond the usual focus of scholarship on Christianity, she describes and analyzes the world of magical-medical-religious practice, challenging hallowed distinctions among "religion" and "magic." Anyone interested in African American religion will need to reckon seriously with Chireau's text on conjure."—Albert J. Raboteau, Princeton University "Deprived of their own traditions and defined as chattel, enslaved Africans formed a new orientation in America. Conjuring—operating alongside of and within both the remnants of African culture and the acquired traditions of North America—served as a theoretical and practical mode of deciphering and divining within this, enabling them to create an alternate meaning of life in the New World. Chireau's is the first full-scale treatment of this important dimension of African American culture and religion. A wonderful book!"—Charles H. Long, Professor of History of Religions University of California, Santa Barbara and author of Significations: Signs, Symbols and Images in the Interpretation of Religion

Mojo Workin'

Mojo Workin' PDF Author: Katrina Hazzard-Donald
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 0252094468
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
A bold reconsideration of Hoodoo belief and practice Katrina Hazzard-Donald explores African Americans' experience and practice of the herbal, healing folk belief tradition known as Hoodoo. She examines Hoodoo culture and history by tracing its emergence from African traditions to religious practices in the Americas. Working against conventional scholarship, Hazzard-Donald argues that Hoodoo emerged first in three distinct regions she calls "regional Hoodoo clusters" and that after the turn of the nineteenth century, Hoodoo took on a national rather than regional profile. The spread came about through the mechanism of the "African Religion Complex," eight distinct cultural characteristics familiar to all the African ethnic groups in the United States. The first interdisciplinary examination to incorporate a full glossary of Hoodoo culture, Mojo Workin': The Old African American Hoodoo System lays out the movement of Hoodoo against a series of watershed changes in the American cultural landscape. Hazzard-Donald examines Hoodoo material culture, particularly the "High John the Conquer" root, which practitioners employ for a variety of spiritual uses. She also examines other facets of Hoodoo, including rituals of divination such as the "walking boy" and the "Ring Shout," a sacred dance of Hoodoo tradition that bears its corollaries today in the American Baptist churches. Throughout, Hazzard-Donald distinguishes between "Old tradition Black Belt Hoodoo" and commercially marketed forms that have been controlled, modified, and often fabricated by outsiders; this study focuses on the hidden system operating almost exclusively among African Americans in the Black spiritual underground.

Brujas

Brujas PDF Author: Lorraine Monteagut
Publisher: Chicago Review Press
ISBN: 1641604026
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
"Brujas, Witches of Color are ancestral magical beings and the world we live in has tried to silence our voices. . . . This book is such a beautiful tribute to the different stories and experiences we go through as brujas. . . . Amplify the voice of Witches of Color by reading their stories." —Juliet Diaz, author of Witchery and Plant Witchery There is a new kind of witch emerging in our cultural consciousness: the bruja. Witchcraft has made a comeback in popular culture, especially among feminists. A growing subculture of BIPOC witches, led by Afro-Caribbean immigrants, Indigenous Americans, and other witches of color, is reclaiming their ancestral traditions and contributing their voices to the feminist witchcraft of today. Brujas chronicles the magical lives of these practitioners as they develop their healing arts, express their progressive politics, and extend their personal rituals into community activism. They are destigmatizing the "witch" of their ancestries and bringing persecuted traditions to the open to challenge cultural appropriation and spiritual consumerism. Part memoir, part ritual guide, Brujas empowers readers to decolonize their spiritual practices and connect with their own ancestors. Brujas reminds us that witchcraft is more than a trend—it's a movement.
